Title: Are "Nintendo buttons" just long Wico Leafswitch buttons?
Post by: javeryh on January 26, 2009, 11:48:12 am
I'm specifically asking about Donkey Kong, I guess, since that is what I'll be restoring.  Lizardlick is selling Wico NOS  Long Leafswitch Pushbuttons for $2.00 each and I'm wondering if these are the exact same ones used in a Donkey Kong cab.  I am pretty sure the regular Happs buttons are 1/16" too big for the CP holes.  MikesArcade sells a "Donkey Kong" set but for $15.  I'd love to get them new for $6.75 (including the Pal Nut) though.

Thanks!

You can see the difference in the pics you posted if you look at the "body" of the button (e.g. the part that goes through the hole).

Here is a lousy pic of two buttons from my Big Box o' Buttons with a spacer ring from a VS control panel. The Wico has a bigger body (the Nintendo button is just a hair narrower than a standard Happ button).

Thanks for the info!  I guess I'll be ordering from Mike's.  I should probably go all out and get the BUTTON HOLDERS (http://www.mikesarcade.com/cgi-bin/store.pl?sku=PBHOLDERN) and MICROSWITCHES (http://www.mikesarcade.com/cgi-bin/store.pl?sku=TKG-23-13) too, right?  $41.25 +tax and shipping for three buttons, the holders and the switches seems pricey to me but I want to do this right...

If I were you, I'd do the right thing and get those buttons, but use LEAFs on the underside.

Perfect fit:

Donkey kong has a white/orange button. The set of 3 buttons is not correct. You need a white button too, and separate the 2 parts and combine them again from both colours.

There has been some debate over the correct colours, but the best answer is provided by a pic from the 1982 Life Magazine photo shoot -- it shows solid orange (to my eyes).

I'm going to stick with the solid orange - that white button/orange bezel is hideous.  I'm going to keep everything as close to the original as possible but for little cosmetic stuff like that I'm going to do what I think looks best.  THat CP also suggests the the joystick was red - I'll be using black (like in the pic CheffoJeffo posted).  This cab has to look nice in my house at the end of the day!  OK, I approval from the supreme overlord of the house AKA the wife.   ;D

No agree on that. Combining these two colours is the coolest they could have done to the Donkey. Sad Nintendo did not came up with it themselves. I hope many find this on google search and combine the 2 colours into one button!

Hey they went nuts with the name too remember? Monkey Kong: boring, hey lets call the monkey donkey!. A little twist with one of the buttons totally fits that weirdness.

Aha ! So that means my orange holder/red button was original too. And only on the Mario side of course, and Luigi is all red....yeah, sure !

Perfect! The match of the blue, the red and the orange is just AMAZING! So subtle! Something wrong with the Luigi side though.

Quote from: Miyamoto
For Donkey Kong I wanted something to do with 'Kong' which kind of gives the idea of apes in Japanese and I came up with Donkey Kong because I heard that 'donkey' meant 'stupid' so I went with Donkey Kong. Unfortunately when I said that name to Nintendo of America nobody liked it and said that it didn't mean 'Stupid Ape' and they all laughed at me! But we went ahead with that name anyway.

If you're trying to keep it original, why are you putting leaf switch buttons in it? DK used microswitches for both the joystick and the buttons, on both the upright and cocktail versions (cocktails used a slightly smaller ball on the joystick and almost flush mounted buttons)

I'm going to keep it as "original as possible but maybe slightly modified if I think I will enjoy it better".  I'm also contemplating using a Sanwa JLF joystick instead of a Nintendo original.

As far as the orange button debate, just ask Mr Rogers:

Ah ok...I thought he was planning on putting leaf switches in, which definitely isn't original ;D

Are those sticks that good? Cause to me, the stock DK stick is perfect for that application. Just loose enough, but not too loose. Normally I don't like microswitch sticks, but they're not noticable on the Nintendo sticks.

Guess you got confused by the pics I put up there of my MB CP.

I take the liberty to improve a game as I see fit. First of all, I hate microswitches. They suck. Second, I'm not doing the game any harm, it can always be reversed.Third: you don't SEE it do you ? You FEEL it though ! :D

I've made the button and trackball lit in red on my Centipede. Original ? No. Looking awesome ? Yes !
Think I did it in the most tasteful possible way (unlit, they're both white).

Another example: my Meteor has unbelievably heavy-going microswitches. You can bet your last penny on it that I will replace them with leafs. If that makes the gameplay so much better for me, that's the way I go.

By the way, what's up with the side of that Centipede in that GAY video ? (That Mr. Rodgers approaches kids just like they _don't_ want to.....geez....)

The sanwa  JLF sticks are really close to Nintendo sticks in the way they feel.
I bought the JLF-TP-8T,so I didn't have to wire each ground separately for each switch.
You could always get Mikes Arcade's repo stick.but it is a bit more expensive,$54.00 vs $24.95
