Title: What to do with an old, fat playstation 1
Post by: AcidArmitage on January 25, 2009, 08:01:55 pm
I just found my old playstation (not even the small ONE model hahah) and I don't wanna just throw it away. Anybody have any ideas what to do with this old thing? hows the homebrew on this system?

IMBNES (NES) is fairly decent.
I think that there might be a gameboy emulator.

A PS one?

Just sell it as audiophile CD player. 100$ is no problem.

If its a SCPH-1001 I'd probably sell it unless you're really into sound. I couldn't see myself using that over any other quality sound deck, but I'm really an audio guy. As long as it isn't scratchy I'm fine...

There's an old ass schematic that floated around for years. Pull an IC out of the PSX and build your own Macrovision stripper box using Sony's own technology.

I still have the schematic on some old hard drive or another. No idea where it can be found online.

Not like it's of any use nowadays, but hey, you asked.  :dunno

I really still like my old PS1. I dust it off and play a few games now and then. Still really fun. Last was Nectarus (Military madness) boy I used to love that game on the Turbographics...It holds up rather well I think.

So I vote that you play games on it.

Is the audio quality really that much better on a PS1 than your average DVD/CD player?
Sometimes I'm glad I'm not an 'audiophile'.  :laugh2:

Must have been something related to the times. Remember when the PS2 came out at the verge of DVD's popularity? Maybe there was a similar situation with the early days of Playstation.

It was a fad a while ago and a topic of big discussion on all the audio boards. I guess SONY used high quality parts in the original PSX and someone recently discovered that it's an audiophile performer. I've seen lots of photos on the net of cutting edge tube systems costing many, many thousands of dollars, and there's this little Playstation 1 sitting in the cherry rack along with the rest of the gear. Here's an article on the subject.  (http://www.6moons.com/audioreviews/leben2/system_3.html)

This is kinda like the $30 Sonic Sense T-Amp craze (http://www.tnt-audio.com/ampli/t-amp_e.html) that happened a couple of years ago. People were replacing their $6,000 amps with this $30 digital jobby.

To the OP: I still use mine for 3 things:

1) Playing PSX games. It's still good for that. I usually play via ePSXe on my cabinet now, but I still use the real hardware for the games that demand an original controller (MGS, Siphon Filter, etc.). I never bought a PS2 or PS3 so the PS1 is useful to me.

2) IMBNES (http://imbnes.gamebase.ca/) which is a really nice emulator. It's nice to have to have a full CD-R of NES ROMs on demand

3) CD Player. Hey, it's audiophile baby.  ;)

imdbnes is great.  The video quality is very close to that of the original console, NTSC artifacts and all.  Plus the controls have virtually no lag, which is an issue sometimes with NES emulators on PC.

Are those ones with the parallel port supposed to be rare or something cuz I have 3 of them. Also I have a SCPH-1001 if anyone was actually interested in getting one.
