does anyone know if there is a maximum number of mice that can be used in mame?
i have 2 lcd top guns, a trackball, and a wireless mouse hooked up to my arcade
every device fights to control player one but i can't any of them to control player two (player one works quite well)
i use mala and enabled light gun and dual light gun input in the FE
does anyone have an insight?
i guess while i'm asking, i also can't seem to get virtual cop 2 to work at all with the guns (neither player 1 or 2), but it works great with the trackball and mouse
any one else have a similar problem?

okay, i've fumbled through getting multiple mouse inputs to show up in mame (apparently i must have tried -multiplemouse instead of -multimouse)
now both are showing up, the only problem is, i can't my second gun (gun 3) to read on its own
it keeps lumping gun 1 in with it
any suggestions?

what OS are you using?
I do not know how to answer your question but I know XP has a problem with multi mice.
I think there is a work around now , Not sure.
been a long time since I tried it.

interesting, i turned off mouse input and everything is fine now
oh well
this is the opposite of what is said in the wiki
although, this could be because of the number of mice inputs that i have
the point is, it now works
thanks for the thought though daywane ;)

Yeah, there have been some changes in different versions of mame, and it seems some people do better with different settings on the same version of mame. :-\ I'm not sure what's triggering the differences, but you don't more than others here have had.
I'll update the wiki.
And FWIW, mame used to have a limit of four mice/lightguns a long time ago, but that was upped to eight for a while. Currently (and for a little while now), however, mame has no internal limit. If there are any OS or hardware limit, mame can't go beyong that, but for winXP/Vista and USB, that's in the hundreds, so don't worry about (if using a recent version of mame).

I got a similar problem
I'm using Mamewah with Mame32. with 2 lightguns (guncon2) with wingun
the input are:
lightgun 1 .
button 1 = mouse 1
button 2 = mouse 2
lightgun 2.
button 1 = mouse 3
button 2 = mouse 4
The problem is when i load the game in mamewah
the lightgun 2 as no input
lightgun button 1 = N/A
To enable the the lightgun 2 input
i must load the game with the mouse plugged, then remove the mouse and plug the lightgun 2
I have try several things. like modifiing the CFG file.
Reboot the computer with or without teh lightgun and mouse plugged in.
Everything.
No way to make this work

First try 0.131. There have been a lot of fixes added to the lightguns since 0.130.
2nd, if you are using wingun drivers, they do not work as independent mice. So you can not real time track independently with 2 of them.
For any OS/gun setup that does not report individual guns as separate mice, you need to use -lightgun -dual_lightgun. The first gun must use mouse buttons 1,2 and the second gun uses 3,4.
3rd, as I have never tried 2 guncon guns with the wingun driver, I can't say if it will even work. The 2 will probably fight for the mouse cursor if they real time track. If they only update the cursor position in Windows when the button is pressed, then they should work fine. But if both guns are trying/fighting to move the cursor in windows then you need to use smogs drivers.
