I just saw this at Target for like $19.99
It looks much better than the old ones. The joystick feels better, it saves high scores, and it has 12 retro arcade games built in.

It makes me want to try to hack it! :)

Better post the link like this.
I have a hosts-filter for annoying ads and that one blocks 2mdn.net links.
-
The main flaw of the original was the tinny sound. Can you tell me what the sound is like on this new version?
It certainly looks nicer. However, I'm disappointed to note that once again Jakks have put the buttons on the wrong side of the joystick. :banghead:

Hi,
Unfortunately, we do not have any recommendations available as we do not support tampering with the game.
Thank you,

I asked them how to open the game.... as no screws were visible
-
Looks like they just combined two of their existing units as far as game titles go.
More detail on the controller artwork, but that's about it.
-
Nice UI - quick and smooth. Interesting coin drop. Wonder how many it holds. Pac definitely looked arcade, whereas I think before it was a console port. However, the port didn't stretch or display full screen, but did like Mame does with default settings.....ohhh....looks like they hacked the rom to display score, pacs, and fruit on the side. Still looks like authentic sprites, though. I wonder if all the games are 4-way? In the video, the stick didn't seem restricted. And, yeah, buttons are on the wrong side. What is this, a return to the thinking of the 70s?
-
The games are used in the table-top layout, and are original. Only thing missing from the first attempts are the coin credits. Maybe they even included authentic credit display in this one.
-
I don't know why they insist on putting the sticks on the left side and the buttons on the right. Irritates the hell out of me!
-
I don't know why they insist on putting the sticks on the left side and the buttons on the right. Irritates the hell out of me!
Probably because that's how Atari 2600 controllers were and those of us who were around for that era are more than likely their target.

Other way around surely?!

Yeah for home computers etc I always used my right hand for the stick, even on those joysticks with a button on each side. Not sure why actually ???

What does that mean?

If they are like the originals, the screws are on the sides underneath the artwork. You have to feel around, and poke through the art to get at the screws.
-
I can't find this for sale yet.
Found 1 old ebay listing and that's it.
Definitely not at Target.com yet.
-

What does that mean?
Yeah, do you mean like there was an official 4:3 aspect ratio release of Pac-Man or something? Cause that would be pretty badass.
-
Much better with a design and components more akin to a genuine arcade, but to suggest it as a serious alternative to building your own emulation cabinet as the article describes is a little ambitious...
That said, if the games are an emulation/hack of arcade hardware and roms as opposed to the NES/Megadrive etc. sources used on previous plug and play units, and the thing is easy enough to take apart, this could make a great buy for a simple bar-top build or basic full-size cabinet - with the controls the right way round of course!

;D in australia we call that 'trying it on'

Still looking to get one of these hopefully before Valentines Day or the wife's B-day (March 29) so if anyone has a lead...... :notworthy:
cheers
-
If I saw one I'd pick it up...I like the other Pac unit. The version appears to be the same though...
-
they have these at our local walmarts, you may want to check there if you are trying to find one.

Are you sure it's the new one in the video?
I've played 2 sucky versions (original? and gold) from the local walsmart.
-
i'm not 100 percent sure...what is the difference between them? the one i saw looked like that one, with two white buttons on the left side of the joystick, and it had 12 games. i'll look more closely the next time i am there

Yep, sounds like the new one. ;D

I've got one of these:(http://di1.shopping.com/images1/pi/fc/f2/95/40654330-177x150-0-0_.jpg) that was played one night.
and played the other:(http://technabob.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2008/10/jakks_arcade_gold_pacman-150x150.jpg) just as worthless.
-
Amazon has them.

I wonder if they use a 4 way stick, It wold be pointless if not.
-
Pac Man and others had a 4:3 landscape layout for table-tops. Those versions are used. The sticks are 4-way, but for Bosconian, it means weird play, as that game was 8-way.
The Blue Miss Pacman version had a stick that also is an analog steer for Pole Position. You can turn it 90 degrees left and right, and it jumps back to center position with a spring. Pretty nifty made.

I have seen this one for $10 what makes it worthless?
-
Thanks for the link rlemmeon. I ordered one, I'll let y'all know what I think of it.
stan2323: The joystick is not very "true" especially down and left. I have played 2 of that model and both of the joysticks were too frustrating while playing Ms Pacman. Galaga and Pole Position are not so bad but I'd still rather player Galaga and Ms Pacman with a keyboard than that thing.
-
stan2323: The joystick is not very "true" especially down and left.
That's because of the Pole Position analog rotary steering incorporated into the 4way stick. The Mr. Pacman version is working much better on the labyrinth.
Found this today:

Anybody played this one?
-
The new version also has the pole position twist function. I wonder if it is 4-way or 8-way. When I messed with it in the store it seemed like a 4 way, but then why would xevious be included? It's bad enough that Bosconian plays weird (no diagonals) but that's pushing it!
-

It's not analog. It's optical.

Bosconian is actually 4-way, which is one reason it bites.
-
Bosconion is 8-way! (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bosconian)
And the joystick is not optical. It is a potmeter inside the 4-way stick.

No it isn't.

I had something similar. I think its probably a NES hack jobby. They were all over the UK a few years back.

Whoops, didn't read what I wrote! I meant sticks on the right and buttons on the left. It's a ---gosh-darn--- standard having sticks on the right and buttons on the left!
Anyone know how well the new Jakks Retro Arcade work on HDTV's? I have a couple of the older joystick games which look horrible.
-
These were on sale at my local target today for $15.09
They only had one left though
Weird price!
-
Did you buy it?
-
No, tight budget now!
I have so many of these laying around that I figure I'll mess with those first, and if I get good at soldering I'll buy the new one and use that for a project.
-

I bought one of these a few years back. a buddy of mine came and visited me for a weekend, and we played Galaga for 9 straight hours! After the intense battle the button broke, and was unfixable. it was worth it though.. besides the fact that my last score was 150,200, and his was 150,800. i was so pissed!
-
I saw one of the new versions at the local Walmart. It definitely has a more classic overall look to it and the stick seemed to feel a bit more authentic. But the buttons are on the wrong side if you want to set it on a table while you play. Is there really any value in "arcade style buttons" when players have to press them with their thumbs? They should add $2 worth of plastic to these things and make a true mini-table top controller. As it is, it's probably an improvement to the first units, but outside of any advancements in the actual circuitry (I don't know about that part...didn't buy one), it doesn't seem to be a huge step up.

Bosconion is 8-way! (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bosconian)
Oh oh oh, you're right. Sort of. It isn't true 8-way, which is why it's so clunky and bites.
And the joystick is not optical. It is a potmeter inside the 4-way stick.
Joystick on Pole Position? OH OH OH OH, on that special mspac thing you mentioned. Ah, sorry.
-
I'm with Ummon - Bosconian sucks.
Some classic games are retro and awesome - that is why we are all here - but many games are just old and suck.
Eric.
-
I actually was quite happy to find it on the Pac-stick. Never heard of it before, but it's a good challenge. Better playable than most shoot-m-ups/side scrolling shootsers.

Wow....I hope you are just referring to the implementation on the Jakks unit as others seem to be.....
Bosconian is a true classic that was ported to many systems due to it's popularity and it offered some very addictive and hectic gameplay. It's one of my all time favorites, but to each his own I guess.... :dunno

-
Haha, actually I was referring to the game itself... I suspect it is one of those deceptively addictive games hiding behind horrendous graphics and cheesy sounds :)
Zookeeper is another one of those - a GREAT game, but just looks and sounds terrible :)
Eric.
-

Huh? ???
+1 !
I'd sure like to see that !
-
It's hard to argue against $20, especially when I have Drill bits I only bought for my Cabinet that cost me as much!
-
If you hack a 4/8 switching stick to one of the blue ones, Bosconian plays properly 8-way. It's a physical restriction of the machine, not a software restriction. Makes it suck waaaaaay less.
I did it a few years ago when I made a mini-cab for the niece&nephew (http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php/topic,28595.0.html)

Ho there! Blasphemy. Actually, I remember thinking Zoo Keeper was a little questionable, graphics and sound-wise when it came out. I don't think I got to play it till Mame, and I ended up forgiving it, because the game play is great.

That's what I've always thought - as in, why did so many people like it? But, hey, lot sof people think RallyX was/is cool. I just think the marquee is bad-ass. I love that old art style from the 70s and 80s. I remember coming into a class in probably '87 and someone had left a huge outrageous four-by on the main board. Shame to wipe it off.
-
I've been enjoying playing Galaga and Pole Position but can't believe I bought this for my wife and it doesn't even have Ms Pacman. doh!
And there is no 2-player option.
-
Does anybody know a place to get one of these in Europe?
-
Just bought one on eBay, I'll try to compare with the Ms. Pac-Man version I have (the one with the GameKey slot and the twisting joystick/steering wheel).
-
Got 2 of these last week. They are really good fun. Only problem, the fire button is on the wrong side and extremely stiff. It makes your arm hurt. Definitely one to put into a cheap multicab.

You're in Europe, aren't you? Can you tell me where you bought them?
The reason I ask is because I've never seen them for sale here in the UK.
-
Bought them very cheap at amazon.com. They don't ship to europe, but almost for nothing within the US, so a friend repacked the stuff for me and send it from the twin cities.

I from here in the states. I could do the same for you too Grasshopper.

I've hacked of of these and the older Ms. Pacman into one of those Midway 12 in 1 target deals, it was a perfect combination!
One thing that comes up right away if you want to put these into a cab is that the new version has a battery save function where it automatically turns itself off if it's not touched/played for like 5-10 mins. The old Ms. Pac will stay in "attract mode" forever, just like a "real" arcade.
The "coin drop" is just a start button with an led that lights up the coin logo, a cute touch. The interesting thing about hacking these is that when you open it, you will see that the joystick works the exact opposite as a "real" arcade joystick. I just took out all the cheesy microswitches and put them in the Midway control panel, Ms Pac on the left, new one on the right and use the midway joystcks which are a little better than the jakks joysticks.
High scores are saved! Bosconian is awesome! I wonder if the no shoot hack works on Galaga, the games look SO close to the original, I just never have the patience for to try it.
-
If you live in Canada, you'll be happy to learn that the 12-in-1 is available at Canadian Tire for only 25$CAD (http://www.canadiantire.ca/AST/browse/3/ChristmasToys/ToysGames/ElectronicGames/PRD~0504328P/Pac-Man%252BArcade%252BTV%252BGame.jsp).

My local crap-stock shop had them a few months back on clearance and also the Golden Tee golf game (snagged two of them) to hack for a PS2 LCD/DC mini cab I have kicking around. Like others say - its a nice idea but if you are on a tight budget you can find these in the goodwill/oxfam shops for a fiver. I think Argos had them a year ago and learned their lesson.

Hi IG-88, thanks very much for your kind offer. I might get back to you on that. Could you accept payment through Paypal?
Blanka, can you remember how much the shipping was? I've just looked to see how much they go for on Ebay, and some US sellers are charging £21.80 to ship one over. :o
-
Ya I can do paypal. Let me know what you decide.
-
Pac Man and others had a 4:3 landscape layout for table-tops. Those versions are used.
Umm, the only difference between an upright and a cocktail is the screen flips upside down in cocktail mode. They both still use the same vertically oriented monitor with the same aspect ratio. They've redone the screen on these retro arcade games so the score, number of men left and what board you are on are on the right side next to the maze instead of on top (score) and bottom (men and board level). Bosconian and New Rally-X probably looks correct though, as that's how the screen looked on the original arcade (with the score and radar map on the right side of the screen)
-
Blanka, can you remember how much the shipping was?
Within the US I qualified for free supersaving delivery.
The package to europe (2 pieces) was 28$. So about 19 euros.
-
Are those shipping quotes from USA to Europe for air or land/sea transport?
I routinely ship packages to Europe by land/sea for about 15$CAD. Takes four to six weeks for delivery though.
-
Yeah I love these things, $20 for the guts of little arcade Machine is awesome
I've got a few little projects going now with these

naw, just some mini cabs for friends. Under $100 for each one though. I had to make something cheap. I spent way too much $$$ on the Benderama
I'll start a post in the Projects thread soon

Can't wait to see what you used for the displays. Also can't wait to see if you have recycled the Jakks controls or if you used real parts from Sanwa, Seimitsu, Happ or something else. And last, can't wait to see the size of those things.
How many mini cabs are you building? Will they all be identical?
Better start that new thread right now, even if there's no pictures. :laugh2:

Guess it was air. From amazon to friend to holland took from wednesday to monday.
-
Can't wait to see what you used for the displays.
I plan to buy and kill an iPad for its screen as soon as they are available.
-

I plan to buy and kill an iPad for its screen as soon as they are available.
And how do you plan on interfacing the LCD? There's less expensive LCD displays available and those have composite and/or VGA inputs.
-
I have a good composite to DVI upscaler laying around, and most of these laptop kind of displays have a flat DVI cable.
There might be cheaper screens, but hey, we wan't a serious one: IPS + 4:3 aspect. Try to find that.
And second: what is cooler than killing an iPad the week it comes out for public and have a nice blog post about turning it into an arcade. The exposure is priceless. No problem it is 450 euro down the drain.

Amazon currently has these on sale for $19.77 if you can't find one locally its not a bad price.
