Has anyone been able to get the doo doo doo doo sound out of their DK Mario as he runs up the ramp?
That was one of my favorite sounds from back in the day. I'm assuming it's the rom and not the emulator? Maybe that sound was never able to get ported over? A friend of mine had the sit down arcade when we were growing up...
-
Which version of MAME are you using?
-
I'll have to check when I get home....but does it work for you? Thanks
-
I don't recall any sounds missing the last time I played it. Earlier versions of MAME used samples for some of the sounds, so if you're using an older version, you might be missing that particular sample. Other than that, I have no idea why any sounds would be missing.
-
I've been using versions of mame32. Everytime I try to use the latest version of mame it never works on my computer?
Intel P4
1 gig ram
40gig
XP
Do I need more?
-
Are you using updated roms with the latest versions of MAME that you've tried?
-
update roms? I thought roms were just roms...sort of a one time thing.
I'm not supposed to ask but are there sites out there with updated roms on them?
Like DK 1.0 and DK 1.1 etc?
-
Oh, come on! If you know you're not supposed to ask, then why are doing it and breaking Rule #5 (http://arcadecontrols.com/arcade_message_rules.html)?
Some roms are updated periodically, so that could very well be your DK problem.
-
are you seriously jumping down my throat right now? or are you kidding?
just didn't know that there were updates to roms...that's all
-
No jumping, just confirming that you're correct about it being against the rules to ask.
-
Now which rule are you breaking??
1. Be nice to each other. We're serious about this one. Disagree, debate, argue at will - but please be respectful. Messages that are ******flame-bait*****, hateful, racist, or otherwise pointlessly antagonistic will likely be sent to post-hell, and repeat offenders banned from posting.
Try rereading my question?
I asked, "are there sites out there that have UPDATED roms on them?"
I did not ask where to get roms
Thanks for all your help though...peace
-
I understood your question.
Yes, there are sites with updated roms.
-
Tip:
Your version of MAME needs matching versions of roms.
-
Wow, huh? versions of mame have matching roms?
So to find out you find the version of mame you would go to properties right?
Then you would go to properties on the rom...and then check to see if the versions match?
Thanks for stepping in on the wiseguy :P
-
Donkey Kong in the current versions that have the sound properly emulated have the correct Jumpman walking sound.
-
Thanks for stepping in on the wiseguy :P
Okay, I'll admit that I probably need more fiber in my diet...but you admitted that you know you're not supposed to ask, and yet you asked anyway. I guess that's just a pet peeve of mine, so sorry. I don't think it makes me a "wiseguy," and I'm sorry I started offering advice in the first place. Peace, indeed.
Donkey Kong stopped using samples in MAME .116, I believe.
I don't know whether you can use "properties" to check the MAME version, but I know for sure that you can check it by entering "mame -h" from the command line. I'm not sure how you figure out what version of the roms you might have.
-
but you admitted that you know you're not supposed to ask, and yet you asked anyway
The point is he never asked anything that was technically against the rules. He only asked if there were sites out there with updated roms, not where to find them.

Yes, yes, and now I'm back on board offering help on how to determine the version of MAME/roms, if he hasn't put me on his ignore list already. Sorry to get us off topic in the first place.

Skyblast , I had the same problem...You need to see what version MAME you have...I had ver. 114 and at the time I was trying to figure out MAME ( STILL AM!)... I went to mameworld.net and located another webpage called Twisty samples ( look for it)...He/She has old versions and newer version Mame samples...find the one called dkong and copy it over to your samples folder located in your mame folder...it should work....
I found this out because the samples were renamed...
-
Older version of MAME = used samples for sound...if the samples are missing from the samples sub-folder in the MAME folder, you're not going to hear sounds with MAME .116 and before I do believe it was.
Newer version of MAME = Sounds properly emulated by MAME - No samples necessary.
Your options are - Get the samples and leave MAME alone or get a new version of MAME and don't worry about the samples. If you're a newb I'd recommend just getting the samples since MAME seems to be functioning fine for you aside from the DK sounds.
-
Plus, the 'accurate' sound emulation is a little tubby in the bass. Maybe it is accurate, but it's not necessarily preferred.
-
Yeah, I hate how muffled it sounds. I sometimes make the mistake of showing Donkey Kong to people first thing when I fire up my cab and the sound leaves them less than impressed.
-
If you think Donkey Kong running sounds bad in the current MAME, you should fire up Mario Bros. Now that one is way off.
-
I haven't got there yet. On my # - Z quest through the entire MAME catalogue, I'm only in the mid G's.
-
Thanks you guys for all your help. It's really fun to learn new things!! Knowledge its power!!
Going to TWisty now!!
-
Edit:
I found the answer here  ..easy
