1. Big TVs (yes plural) each with a video game system or two (xbox or xbox360)
2. Mame Cab (showcase cab if possible)
3. Jukebox (or PC with Juke software... and touch screen)
4. Pinball Machine
5. The most elusive and expensive ... women .... which if you have Rock Band makes having women in your game room alot easier

No shuffleboard?
No mini-bar?
No old-time popcorn machine?
No comfy leather recliner?
No super chexx bubble hockey?

I'd also swap out the big TV for a projector and the table tennis for a pool table.   I have my exact dream gameroom/basement all laid out - I just need to get a big enough house!!

A minibar would be sweet
Projectors are more of a pain then a big TV
popcorn machine ..... id skip that ... and as much as I want a cotton candy machine still its not on my top 5.

Pool table is another good one, if I had the room, I'd def go for one, even though I'm horrible at it.
I just wish they had a quality pool table/air hocky table

I'm in the process of remodeling my basement.  Already have:

Mame Cabinet
Pinball Machine
Pool Table
Skill Stop Slot Machine
Electronic Dart Board
Table Tennis
Foosball
Touchscreen Jukebox
14' Bar

I will be adding a 1080P projector with 106" screen once the basement is complete.  I have the projector in hand, just waiting to set it up once the dust settles.  Am planning on upgrading my foosball table and replacing electronic dart board with a Valley Cougar machine at the next auction.  Can't wait till it's done!  I'll post pics.

Interesting -- there is no way that I would want my theatre room and game room to be the same -- in my house it would limit use of the both too much.

I want to be able to play a rollicking game of Robotron or some pinball without disturbing Mrs Cheffo or the kids watching a movie.

Conversely, I don't want to hear Mrs Cheffo pinging away on Bust A Move while I'm watching Blade Runner.

I agree with Cheffo.

When I say Theater I mean an HDTV, game console & speakers....not a front projector theater setup.

This allows Madden or Forza to be played with the lights on, because it would suck to play darts in the dark just as much as it would to play COD in a bright room washing out 80% of your picture on a front projector theater.

Ever considered and air hockey table?  It takes up less room than a pool table since you can have it up against a wall.

I plan on having a separate "theater" room for the projector and movie watching.  The HDTV with the consoles will be in another space not in the theater room.  Right now it's all a pipe dream though - I'm planning to move soon but I don't know how much bigger of a house I can afford.

Gotta have a big bar fully stocked.  A full sized refridgerator is the way to go.  A mini-fridge is....well....too mini.

My basement/gameroom is pretty much all open and really just one big room.  If you were sitting by the bar you can see/hear just about everything - all while playing the Itouch5.  You can watch the 32" TV by the bar or the 65" TV in the "living room" area of the basement.  You could also see someone playing the mame cabinet and throwing darts.  I personally love this setup.  I think if I had a dedicated theater room I would obvioulsy only have the theater in that room.

My basement was really designed originally for watching NFL games/entertaining.  Personally I like the mame cabinet being out in the open.  Its just a really big room with lots to do.....

I have pics posted in Pinballwizard's game room pics thread.  I highly recommend checking out that thread its pretty cool.  I'll have to repost some pics at some point as there have been some changes to what you see in my pics.

My top 5(6) would be mame cabinet, big TV with surround sound, big bar, touchscreen game (Itouch/megatouch), pinball, jukebox.  Sorry I cant do just 5 as I deem all these necessary.  Now I just need to get that pinball........

I'm kinda cheatin' ;)

5 - hidef Home theatre in one end of the room with X360/PS3 and of course favourite movies
4 - Pool table with a ping pong top at the other end
3 - Real pinball machine (Firepower) near the middle
2 - Mame cab that also plays several roles: play cool cab friendly PC games, other emulators, pinball, jukebox and hopefully soon some slots (gotta figure that one out!)

and most importantly...

1 - ME with friends/family, whether playing with my man-cave toys, watching movies or relaxing sitting at the computer desk reading/posting messages on arcadecontrols.com, while watching HDTV or listening to the jukebox in the background.

I have other toys, Air Hockey, Dart board, etc; but they don't get the attention those are the top 5 for sure.

:)

Flake, I'm doing the same thing as you with my basement.  It's an open space due to the large amount of parties and get togethers my wife and I have.  I don't want a dedicated theater room cause I often have people over for sporting events and there's nothing like watching football on a 106" hdtv screen.

I'd also say a poker table AND a table for classic board games like Monopoly, Risk, Stratego etc.  I enjoy playing those types of games as much as video games.

I say ixnay on the table tennis. Takes too much room and won't get much play. Same for billiards. It's a luxury if you have the space.

You need at least 1 modern Pachinko machine, a jukebox (not necessarily a large one... it can just be your IPOD connected to a stereo  ;D ), and arcade posters and a couple neon signs.

Is that a must have or an afforded luxury?

I'm afraid if its a must have then I will striving for the perfect gameroom the rest of my life............or I could just kick the wife to the curb....

1) mame cabinet
2) poker-boardgame table
3) TV
4) jukebox
5) Rock Band or GH World Tour
The mame cabinet on its own is great but it also serves as a great time killer for the first ones knocked out of a poker tourney or Axis & Allies game.  I included Rock Band - GH World Tour since both are good for getting different age groups to play together and laugh with/at each other.

Yes indeed that was an Office Space quote & I swore flake had it when I saw the words "pay for it" but no dice.

Also Flake, you cannot talk your wife into such an activity unless you have completed it at least once already during the first 90 days of dating.....if you do so or attempt to do so after that window of opportunity has passed things get weird & are rarely successful.

Its clearly written in the Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy.

My advice, hit the PentH in Cahokia & bring a few disco biscuits  8)

& ask for Cinnamon

Totally kidding about all of that except the office space stuff  ;)

That was what I was about to say. Why should something that's in every living room be in the gameroom? Something that helped kill arcades no less? Good catch Ummon. The only bigscreen TV in an arcade should be attached to a Star Wars Racer or a Tekken 5  ;D

Whaaat?

Are you really hating on the TV?

Playing xbox360 games online with your pals, talking smack or collaborating in real time while seeing this unfold on a massive 1080p HDTV with the speakers/sub up so loud it nearly hurts the testes is an AMAZINGLY good time.

Perhaps there are some old timers with a list like this:

1. Poker table (casinos killed these)
2. Pool table (I cant think of a smart ass comment here :-)
3. Bingo machine (those darn pinballs with flippers ruined bingo)
4. Record player juke (OMG, those MP3's ruined everything)
5. Chinese abacus (I cant believe people use calculators)

Half of those don't count. And plenty of people have weekend poker games.

Also, did no one mention foosball??  I don't think one's required in an arcade - but if possible and collecting table top sports, then it's a must.

Why? The topic is "Gameroom musthaves", not "Arcade musthaves". There's a big difference for me, I see "gameroom" as an area where you play games, not just based on arcades, and thus why the home theatre area with relevant consoles is a must.

ducks! ;)

It is safe to say that the definition of gameroom is broadening again.

Looking back at some of my back issues of GameRoom Magazine (http://www.gameroommagazine.com), you see a variety of items in gamerooms -- from diner decor to billiards to foosball to old EM games to jukeboxes to pinballs of all flavours to video arcade games and, now, home consoles. And it's all good.

In my house, I like the gameroom to be reminiscent of the video arcades of the early 80s -- crowded with vids and a few pins. It's too loud and crowded to share the space with a home theatre, although I do have TVs in there. Eventually, I would like to set up a wall of consoles, from classic to modern, but that will have to wait as that wall is currently occupied by my office, pending my finding the time to pour the floor and frame in my real office.

I agree the term gameroom certainly seems to hold a different for some on this forum.  Myself, I like big open spaces in my house so when i finished my basement I planned accordingly.  To wall off several enclosed rooms just to have a "dedicated gameroom" and "dedicated tv room" didnt make much sense.  For resale value purposes alone its a good idea to have one big wide open room downstairs rather than several closed off rooms.  In the end you really have more living space that way.  So that being said, if this is your route, you have no choice but to combine all these things together, arcade, tv, bar, poker table, pinball, whatever.  Like I say, I think its cool to go downstairs and have everything out in the open accessible to all.  It makes gatherings/parties more social anyway since you dont have a bunch of people grouped off in different rooms.

All that being said, when I finished my basement, due to the design of the house, there is one fairly good sized room downstairs that isnt necessarily "open".  We put all our exercise equipment in there, eliptical, bowflex, treadmill since we didnt want that out in the open we "enclosed" the room with double french doors.  So the room can appear closed off or open depending on what you want.  This room also doubles as a play room for our daughter and houses many of her downstairs toys.  I have thought lately how cool it would be to take everything out of there, lay some arcade type carpet down, install some blacklights, and start filling it with arcades and pinballs but the wife wont go for it.  Besides, what would I do with all the exercise equipment I use on a daily basis  :).

I plan on having a smaller "gameroom" in my basement, the room is already there, just waiting for the kids to move out. ;) It will then become a pseudo "classic gameden" which will house all the vintage consoles, from the pong clone right up to what got kicked out of the main gameroom (by then, the PS2 I guess).  My collection is growing quite bit, will be a crowded wall.  Is your collection extensive Cheffo?

Consoles ... not really ... (Intellivision for Mrs. Cheffo, Dreamcast for me, NES, SuperNES, N64 and PS2 for the kids and Wii for everybody).

Cabinets ... not as much as I would like ... about 20 games in various stages of (dis)repair, a pair of slots and a lone pin. I have space for more, but am reserving it for key items on my wishlist.

Now do you see why I don't want my home theatre in the gameroom ?

I have room for probably another 12-20, depending on what I choose to do for a theatre room. Before I got into this hobby, I had planned to put the theatre in a room off of what is now the gameroom. But, I think that I'll put it upstairs once we add on to the house. Then I can use the other room in the basement as a pinball room.

But all of that requires some $$$ that is currently being spent on RealLife(tm).

I've been convinced that MrsCheffo was a very intelligent lady and this confirms it.  I played a few games on Nostalgia last night with Shiny Technologies' Classic Game Controller and a pair of original Intv controllers.  Brought a tear to my eye.

What are her favorites?

Re: TV in the gameroom, my thoughts are this is your fantasy gameroom.  Big enough for everything.  I'd say it fits in at one end of a room that's about 2000 square feet or so.  The full size bar is there along with a nice sofa and recliners etc.  Stripper pole is at the other end by the way.  Not that I've thought about this before....   ;D

I just wanted to repeat myself out of spite.

HDTV, surround sound & xbox360 belong in the game room.

Potpourri is for the living room.

See.

I would rather have a Big screen TV then an arcade Cab.

As evidenced by the fact that you don't want to pay anything for a cab ...

It makes one sad to see TV at the top of the list for an arcade.

Why? The topic is "Gameroom musthaves", not "Arcade musthaves". There's a big difference for me, I see "gameroom" as an area where you play games, not just based on arcades, and thus why the home theatre area with relevant consoles is a must.

ducks! ;)

I think you posted before noticing my later post, incidentally in last place at the time, where I recognized my gaff and then somewhat clarified my point.

I thought you were the one who didn't like arcades and their big boxy games ...

Really?....

A conversation-pit or 2 tiny Pierre Paulin chairs with a tiny orange TV for the 8-bit consoles.

Buddy, that's not a conversation pit, that's a swing party!

Stripper Poll, heh, I’d have to add cot because that’s where my wife would make me sleep if I pout a stripper pole in!

4P Arcade Cabinet (Slowly taking shape)
2P Cabinet
Fridge
Air Hockey
Lighting – I’d want it to have that dark lighting that 80s arcades had.   –
Juke Box!
HDTV for Rockband / Wii party games
Table for Board Games/RPGs
Couch

……

Bigger House so I could actually have this room.
