Title: Anything wrong with exiting to XP's standby
Post by: dkubarek on January 16, 2009, 05:13:38 pm
I have Windows set up pretty much the way I want it. I used the BYOAC wiki to hide everything but I noticed that if I exit Mala to standby instead of shutting the 'puter down all you have to do is walk over to the arcade and touch a button and it goes to the Mala game screen in about one second. This is ideal because my cab is going to kids, the oldest being 10, and I want it to be very easy to use. Is there anything wrong with leaving it on standby? I'm assuming it wastes a bit of power, but I'm not sure how much, and if there are other consequences. Are there? Thanks.

You may want to check this post (http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php?topic=88063.0), a few down from yours. It may affect you until it is fixed.

Ha, thanks for the heads up. I just got Mala .105 and I can't remember the mouse not working after standby. But I'm still in the testing phase and I haven't let it sit in standby that long. I think it cuts the power to everything but the ram after a half hour or so. Also, I pick games with a joystick that's mapped to numbers keys, so I should be fine there.

Mouse fix after standby will be in the next MaLa version.

If there are any consequences I din't know as I don't use it. If you find some please tell us

I am extremely happy with using stand by (other than the referenced bug, of course). It is so nice to be able to fire it up and play within seconds rather than having to wait a minute or two while the computer boots. All my hardware works fine with it, including my Ultimarc u360's, ipac, optipac, and pacdrive.

So far, stand by is working great. I have it set up to never shut off the hard disks, which wastes power a bit, but I can shut it down if the cab stops getting played a lot. The only problem I'm having, and I'm blaming this on my computer (1.8 pent 4; 1 gig ram) is that Mala quits if I use UmuMovies HQ vids for the screensaver link. I switched to stills and it works fine. Also, task manager seems to give Mala a hiccup sometimes. Mala switches to 100% PC usage and sometimes causes a crash. That's also probably not related to stand by. Other than those things are running great.

+1 on just tapping a button and having Mala pop up a second later. To me, it seems more like an arcade when you're able to play right away.
