Title: Do I varnish over gloss on MDF
Post by: langdoguk on January 16, 2009, 04:50:28 am
Hi there,

I have used MDF for my cab which I put 3 coats of primmer on sanding gently between coats now I have put one coat of pink gloss on and I am going to do one more coat.
I have 2 questions maybe you could help me with:

1. Do I sand between coats of gloss ?
2. Do i put a varnish over the gloss and if so is there a certain kind ?

Thanks in advance

That's too many layers of primer! Better 1 layer of primer and 3 final ones. Let each layer of gloss paint harden well: 1 week at least (it sucks, I know, but you will be rewarded). Sand between every layer. Don't be a whimp on sanding, but don't remove everything either off course! It is even possible to end the painting with polishing to remove every dust particle.
If you like the gloss, keep it that way. Or are you sure the varnish is specially made for finishing that particular solid-gloss-paint? They really should be compatible.

Skip the varnish and use some spray lacquer instead.

Do you let the gloss paint harden for the full week before sanding?

Yes.

Sanding between each coat is more about prepping the surface for the next coat than it is about "finishing" the previous coat.
