Hi,
I'm no stranger to Mame...I've had version 0.98 on my computer for several years. I'm having a problem getting version 0.129 to load. This is what I see when I double-click the execution file:
Unable to create the Direct3D device (8876017C)
Unable to initialize Direct 3D
Unable to complete Window Creation
Is my computer missing something that I need to download? I'm running a Dell with Windows XP. I can't even try Mala or any other front end until I figure out what's going on. Anybody know?

Try switching from Direct3D to DirectDraw.

Yup, or set -d3dversion to 8 or 7. (default is 9)
Or maybe upgrade directX. (Sounds like you don't have directX 9.0 installed.)

I downloaded Direct X version 9.0 and my Mame version 0.129 will still not open. Switching from Direct 3D to Direct Draw...how is this done? I'm at a loss as to why this isn't opening. ???

This exact setting has changed since 0.98, but it's still in the mame.ini file or command line (or mameUI UI): -video. If you look at docs/windows.txt that should have come with 0.129 you'll see more details, but basically change the line in the mame.ini file from "video d3d" (the default) to "video ddraw". It used to be done a little differently, but the equivalent used to default to ddraw.
I'll bet your video card isn't direct3d 9.0 compatible (assuming you're using the same hardware as 0.98).
