Title: New cabinet progress...comments?
Post by: gndprx on June 23, 2003, 08:22:36 am
Building my first cabinet and just looking for comments or suggestions.

The control platform is still in the rough stages.  Trying to get all the angles correct before building the side panels.

Monitor opening is large enough to support just about any screen up to 27"  The controls will be 2 player joy plus track ball and spinner in the middle.  Everything is just high enough to be comfortable playing from a bar stool or standing.

Criticism welcome.

Why the flip-up marquee door? What goes up there? Is it like a cubby hole?

Game storage mostly...or just junk collector :)

Since my xbox and playstation will be in there besides the mame box, I needed a little extra storage space and that just seemed the best place to do it.

I'm still looking for ideas on what to do with my steering wheel when I'm not using it... Can't put it up top, though. If you've seent he pictures of my cabinet floating around recently you would see why it wouldn't fit my particular cabinet. I've been trying to find ways to swing it into position...

So are you going to have a light up marquee or is it just going to be a door?

Not sure on the marquee yet.  The cabinet is going to be non-conventional finish (oak stained) to match the rest of the room it's going in.

If I do decide to do a full marquee and back light it, I'm thinking along the lines of either EL sheets (electro luminescent sheets...think indiglo) under the marquee or edge lighting plexi with LED's over the marquee.  We'll see how it goes in when I get to that part.

I know it's not going to be "authentic" arcade cabinet style, but I'm designing around the room and for functionality :D

I think it's interesting how some people can have similar ideas when they're never even talked before about it. You mounted your CP VERY similar to mine. Is your removeable? Just wanna make sure you can fit it out the door some day.

haha, it's gotta fit IN the door first :)

The overall cabinet width is 29" (26 1/2" interior dimension) so it should fit nicely through any standard 30" door opening.

The control panel is 36" width and will be removable by the time I'm done.  It's hinged off the monitor shelf at the moment so that I can get all the angles and cut sizes for the cp sides...once that's done I'll redo the hinge to the cp box itself and have it secure with quick release latches on the back side (inside the cabinet)

I want to be able to swap it out with an empty cp box for my steering wheel and be upgradable down the line.

Hey AlanS17,
Why don't you want to try "swapable" CP's for your cab?

i actually made 2 rails on the front of my cp. when i need a wheel, i just slide it into the rails. when i m done, i slide it back out. pretty simple.

That's gonna look pretty sweet - and the door up top is a good idea for storage.  That thing must be pretty big  :)

Hey AlanS17,

It's 36" wide and 15" deep. It's kinda big to swap. Plus I've already got the plans for the controls all on the one panel with the exception of the steering wheel.

Sliding rails sounds like a good idea, but I don't know where I would put the wheel in the meantime. Hmmm... *ideas brewing*

Pretty much standard size...

76" tall by 29" wide by 30" deep without the cp.

Slightly taller than old style cabinets, but about on par with most of the later model cabinets...

Ok here's my idea. Aluminum U-channels for sliding a board with the wheel mounted on it. Is this what you meant?

I'd also have a set of U-channels strapped to the back/top portion to store the thing when not in use.

TADA!!!

That slider is a great idea.

Now i just ned a way to latch it in place and hold it sturdy. Things break when they live in a frat house. Maybe like one of those locks they use on public bathroom door or maybe a lock-down latch...

I do all my work indoors, too. In fact, I do half my work on my back since I hate unmounting pieces and flipping them over. Now THAT's inhaling sawdust... Those goggles sure come in handy, though.

Well I'm on my way to Home Depot. Gonna buy me some of those U-channels. Wish me luck! I'll post pics...
