Title: slot cutter...need help
Post by: severdhed on January 14, 2009, 12:57:20 am
hey guys, i need some assistance.  i am trying to find a 1/16" slot cutter so i can install my T Molding.  i checked lowes, home depot, sears, a few local hardware stores, and cannot find one that size.  harbor freight has a set of 6, that includes the size i need, for $26...however there are two problems with them.

they are probably really crappy bits, but more importantly, they are rated for a max of 16,000 rpm.  i have a laminate trim router, that operates at 26,000 rpm.  if it only exceeded it by a little, i'd consider it, but that is 10,000 rpm over the limit, so i am afraid to use them.    there is one more place i have to check locally that may have one...but i have been looking online...alot of places dont' specify the max rpm for the bits...i'd hate to spend more money and have to wait to get one shipped only to have the same limitation

what should i do?

I used this set on my 25,000 RPM router with no problems:

Well, i lucked out...i stopped at a local surplus store today and picked up a Freud 1/16" slot cutter for $7.90.  now i just need to get an arbor (they didnt have any).  do I have to buy a freud arbor, or should any arbor work?

well, after searching all over the place again for an arbor with a 1/4" shaft and coming up with nothing..i  finally discovered that there is a custom cabinet shop about 4 blocks from my house that sells router bits.  it is a small, mom and pop type place with helpful people.  as it turns out, they have the arbor in stock, but not the bearings.  So he is ordering it for me and it will be in on Wednesday.  i wont get it done this weekend, but to be honest..the chances of that happening even if i had everythign i needed are pretty slim. with two kids under the age of 2, my arcade building time isnt what it used to be.
