Hi there,
Could anyone recomend what glass I should use for in front of my monitor, I am not making a bezel so it would have to be dark but not sure what the type is called , is it smoked and if so how smoked, and how thick. Also it would be about 2 inches in front of the monitor ,would that be okay for the picture or does it have to be almost touching it? Sorry if this has been asked before but I couldn't find an answer so thought I might get told what other people have bought .
Thanks in advance

Get tempered glass, grey or transparant, but if you don't want a bezel, at least spray-paint the "bezel" black on the back of the glass.

Hi,
Thanks for the reply, I think I will get the tempered grey glass, is there a certain shade most people on here are happy with and also how thick is the norm. I will be painting everyting behind the glass black except the screen
Thanks

I would go for about 1/4" (6mm) if I was you. I wouldn't want to go any thinner.

Thanks,
Is there different shades of the grey or is it pretty standard?
Cheers

From what I saw on One A Day Glass.com there seems to be only one shade. I know most people here in the USA have ordered from them. There site says... "#31 Gray (1/8" Dark Gray)"
I think I am going to get 1/8" thick.

There are other shades of grey at different thicknesses. At 1/8", there's also a light grey ("Solar Gray"), and at 1/4" there's a #14 Dark Gray. That's the one I plan to use when I get to that point on my cab.
Of course, I don't believe that One Day Glass has overseas shipping, but I imagine there are places in the UK with similar choices.

So there is two shades then, you are going with the darker of the two?

If I can't lay my hands on some Greylite 14, then I assume this #14 Dark Gray is similar enough, yes.

It's strange that OADG only offers certain shades in certain thicknesses.

Thanks for the replies
Here's what I've decided on :6mm tempered grey shaded glass, as far as shades of grey the companies around here (Glasgow) only do one shade but its the thickness that makes it darker, for my quote of 24" x19" it was £20.01. I'm happy with that.
Not too sure about the edges but I'm going to see a sample at the weekend.
Thanks

So I guess the thicker the glass then, the darker the image.
Makes Sense.
I can't think there is too much difference though between 1/8 and 3/16.

Seems like a good price to me :)
It's crazy how a custom sized sheet of tempered smoked glass is around the same price as a similar sized piece of 5mm acyrlic.
Its goos that you can go in to see a sample. If they have samples of different shades it may be a good idea to see if you could borrow some small pieces to test against your monitor.
As for the edges they should put a safety edge on them before they are tempered.
