Are there any games that would REQUIRE me to use the player two coin? ("6" in mame) or can I just get by with using the player one coin ("5" in mame)? Will player two always be able to join a game using credits entered via the player one coin?
-
Not that many games require a second player coin, but there's enough of them that do that you could set a shifted key to allow coin 1 to become coin 2 when shift is held. That or make a hidden player 2 coin button.
-
The answer is yes, you will want some way to put in coins into player 2 slot.
An alternative to what Ginsu describes, you could also map player 2 coin to "5" as well, so every time you hit player 1 coin it counts one for each player. If like me and my friends, you dont really care about counting "quarters" when playing games, this should work fine.
-
Basically, most cooperative games require separate coins for the various players for obvious reasons. Like Gauntlet, beat 'em ups like TMNT/
Double Dragon/Final Fight/Rampage, etc, and many cooperative shoot em ups.
EDIT: removed DD and FF, added Rampage

On my control panel I DO have a coin 1 and coin 2 set up. But now I'm wiring the coin door and for various reasons can only have a coin 1 wired to both coint slots. I was wondering if I could get by with that for the majority of the two player games, or if most of them require a seperate player 2 coin for player 2.

You have two buttons and two coin slots. Why not wire them separately?

It's a bit complicated: The IPAC is in the control panel, so the coin 1 and coin 2 on the CP easily go to that. I have one wire leftover from my admin panel that goes into the CP through a DB9 plug in the back, and I can use that to wire one of the coin door slots. To get a seperate coint 2, I'd have to drill a hole in the back of the CP just for that wire, which I really want to avoid.

This was already answered. I don't understand why you're ignoring what has been said and asking again.

I was answering this followup question that pmc asked: "You have two buttons and two coin slots. Why not wire them separately?"
-
Actually you weren't (he hadn't posted at that point). The wording was unclear. It sounded like you were ignoring answers.

Oh, yeah, I see what happened, I wrote my message while ahofle was posting his and I didn't see it. I did get that message that said "someone else posted a message while you were composing yours" but i ignored it. :-[

I've only coin1 hooked up and havent had a problem yet with any games
I can test any games if ya like
someone mentioned finalfight, doubledragon, etc
My friends play these all the time and coin one will do

If you're like me, not wiring up the second slot ahead of time might bother you down the road, even if it is otherwise servicable. Reworking the wiring (without drilling - i.e. maybe a new connector, like an inexpensive Molex) is not the worse thing you'd have to redo on a cabinet.

My advice would be to definitely add a 'player 2 coin' button. Some games, though thinking of any in particular escapes me now, required seperate coin inputs for each player and did not necessarily have a dip switch setting for single coinage. Plus, having a seperate coin button gives you another button for mapping on emulators besides MAME, such as the 'select' button on SNES emulators or similar platforms with lots of buttons on the controller.

has this been addressed?: you can wire more than one button at a time to any I-pac input. You could wire your button and coin slot together...
-
Given that MAWS doesn't allow for a search based on the number of coin slots, is there another way to do this (or is there a list, to put us all out of our misery ;) )?

But won't that cause problems? When "warrior needs food badly", you want to feed a coin to the correct slot. If you wire them all together, you'll increase Valkerie's health at the same time. That totally upsets the game. Additionally, won't you get double credits for some games?
I'd think you'd be better off compromising with a shifted key arrangement for coin-2.

I honestly havent found a game in mame which needs coin slot 2 since setting up my cab and a friends cab about 2 years ago
-
You just haven't paid enough attention, then...
-
Does this boil down to already having a way to credit players 1 and 2 individually and not wanting to drill a hole to be able to use coin slot 2 ?
Seems to me that you either drill the hole (really, is that such a big deal ?) or just continue to use the button you already have to credit P2.
What am I missing ? ???

Uh, yes they have ...

Gauntlet, TMNT (though this has a 2-player version, as do X-Men, Simpsons, etc), and Rampage have been named. I believe some of the D&D games require separate coins as well.
-
And there's also games like Captain America where as the four player version required FOUR coin slots. (one per specific character)
The two player version had selectable characters, in that case then the number of coin slots doesn't really matter. (one slot is fine)
General rule of thumb is if there is a game that may have an issue with needing more than one coin slot it will be a four player game.
-
Do what i do and set all 4 coins as your coin button in mame
then every time you press the coin button you get 4 coins

Sorry
Just checked
Rampage (Rev 3) doesnt even need player one player 2 buttons lol
TMNT 4 player does
TMNT 2 player doesnt
dd1 doesnt
dd2 doesnt
dd3 doesnt
Final Fight Doesnt
The Simpsons 2 player Doesnt
The Simpsons 4 player Does
So it seems all 4 player games need a coin two but there is a 2 player alternative version for most games which can be played perfectly with only one coin button
-
I agree with ghettodish's suggestion. Wire both your coin1 button and coin1 slot together. Do the same for coin2. This way you only need 2 inputs on the I-Pac instead of 4.
I use this setup on my cab. When playing a game, you have the choice to either put in a token or press the coin button to add a credit for a player.
To clarify, don't wire ALL of the buttons and slots together. Just the button and slot for each individual player. You should only need the Player 1 and 2 coin inputs on the I-Pac doing this.
-
I don't think the inputs on the IPac are the issue -- the issue is running an extra wire from inside the CP to the coin door.
-
let player#2 toss in a coin.
keep it real

Thanks for all the suggestions! FYI, I wired up the coin door last night and decided to combine some of the suggestions to reach an acceptable compromise. On the panel I have coin 1 mapped to 5 and coin 2 mapped to 6. In mame I have coin 1 set to 5 OR %, and coin 2 set to 6 OR %. Then, I wired the coin slots on the coin door together and mapped them to %. The end effect is that I have two independent coin buttons on the panel, and a coin door that will give both player 1 and player 2 a credit when either coin slot is used. This accomplished my goal of not having to drill another hole into the back of my CP (I only had one wire to work with outside of the CP, that's why I had to wire the coin door slots together.)
I'll just have to make sure that people don't use the coin door for the few games where it matters.
-
Sounds like a good solution, although I would have drilled the hole. :P
-
My suggestion would be to have seperate coin buttons for each player. I mounted them under the control panel toward the front, they are hidden from view but easy to tap to add an extra coin when needed.
The problem with wiring both or all coin buttons to one button is that in games like Guantlet 2, the current favorite with my 9 year old daughter and her friends, is that when you added health to all players at once you would be stuck with a player if they leave. I have watched them walk away and wait for a single player to die so they could move on without that player. Kind of funny, but it would be worse if every coin played added health to every player.
Just my two cents. I must say, I especially like having the coin buttons under the front lip of the control panel, so much so, I installed them that way on both of my MAME machines. Just drill straight up from the bottom and you are good to go. No extra buttons on top and easy way to add coins when needed.

I guess you didn't have a chance to read my final solution (reply #29) or even my initial followup (reply #4) where I point out the I DO have coin 1 and coin 2 buttons. My problem only related to the coin door. I mention this only because TheShanMan jumped all over me when there was even the appearance that I posted before I read all of the replies. But thanks for the feedback anyway.
