Title: prewired RGB non-flashing LEDs?
Post by: richms on January 07, 2009, 09:29:45 am
After getting some prewired blue leds off ebay I am never wanting to solder an LED again.

but, does anyone know if there are the seperatly addressable RGB ones available like that? I know they sell the fading and flashing ones, but thats not what I want.

I know they would cost more since the sweatshop has to attach 4 wires per led, but it beats doing it yourself.

Ggg has them:

The flashing and fading is caused by software not the leds themselves (for these units).

I was hoping for them just on pieces of wire with heatshrink over the soldering like the white and self flashing ones I have already got off ebay. That is prettymuch specific to a pushbutton on a board like that.

I guess it depends on the application.  If you want to stuff them in a joystick or something like that, then the RGB Drive boards obviously won't work.  But others have used them for more than just pushbuttons.

The issue with RGB LED's is that 3 resistors and 4 wires are required for each LED, so parts and labor make for an expensive combo.  You can't reduce parts to keep costs down, so one has to reduce labor.  This is usually done by using a small PCB, similar to the one used with the RGB Drive.

Other configurations will probably be at least double in cost.  But if you need a decent quantity and don't mind paying for the work, feel free to shoot me an email.

After thinking about it some more, the differences in cable length I will be needing make pre-wired a bit of a stupid idea since there is just about as much effort joining onto the wires as there is soldering to an led. They have to be able to mount from the front using a snap in bezel so anything on the back is too wide.

Also after testing all the RGBs I have being able to get my hands on I am not happy with the colour mixing - I have some milky ones on the way to see how they go but from the pictures the seperate colours are still visible easily so they may be no good too.
