My first attempt at a poll - boy I hope I did this right.
(Edit) I am a comcast internet customer and this morning they have Iron Man listed as the best movie of 2008, with The Dark Knight second (end edit).
For my own self, I saw both and I liked both. However, no matter how good Downey Jr. is in that suit (and damned if he ain't brilliant), The Dark Knight's pure, unrelenting script wins out hands down.
Even the people who have bit parts understood how important their part was - or wasn't. So good was the Dark Knight that it made you forget from time to time that this was a "comic book" movie.
Comcast did get this much right - it's a masterpiece and again shows what happens when a true fan of the series takes the helm.

Between the two, Batman. Iron Man was great fun, but it didn't have anything like the kind of depth Batman had. I mean . . . seriously, the villains in Iron Man were ---smurfing--- laughably ridiculous. It's a comic book movie, I know. I know. And I loved it. But seriously . . . ---smurfing--- retarded.
However, neither of them would get my pick for best picture. Off the top of my head movies I saw that were better than those include Burn After Reading, Let the Right One In, Slumdog Millionaire. Milk and The Wrestler also look very good. And that Button movie with Brad Pitt looks like it might be really good.

I really liked batman (cept that blue cell phone effect) but it was a sequel using people who already established their ability (or inability depending on your point of view) to portray their characters (for the most part). I'm a HUGE joker mark, hes always been my fave batman villian, ledger did a great job in the role, but I've watched Iron Man about 6 times and I love it every time, I've only watched Batman the one time in the theater despite the fact I own the Blu-Ray.
I just picked up Burn After Reading, so I'll watch it tonight to get an opinion on it.
I guess to summarize I'd say I prefer either one to win movie of the year but I think Iron Man was the better of the 2.

Batman was far better than Iron Man. The final battle in Iron Man felt tacked on, and lower in quality than the rest of the movie.
After seeing Batman in the theatre, I felt that it was a perfect movie. I couldn't think of a single thing that needed to be changed.

fight scenes were lame. also gary oldman needed to be more badass. he was much better in leon the professional..yeah I know different roles but TDK still had room for his badassery. movie of the year though.
