That can allow me to transfer files or programs from one computer to another (usb possibly). My main computer is acting like a biatch and shuts off every hour so I need to transfer stuff from the biatch to the working one. Anyone know of a cheap way to do it.

Without knowing the OS of both systems, I wouldn't be able to give you specific help about transferring files via cable, but here's some general ideas:
In my opinion what you should try to do is make a backup of what you have on the hard drive of the computer that is malfunctioning while you still have a chance to do so. You shouldn't need to make a complete drive image if you still have all the programs you installed (as well as their serial #'s), you'd only need to backup your work product. Of course if you don't have copies of your programs or their serial #'s then a complete backup would be in order. Once you have your data backed up then you can go about fixing your problem.
If you have a CD burner installed in this computer, making a backup is easy. If you don't have a burner in this computer but have one in another computer you own or have access to then pull the hard drive and burn your backup.
If you don't own or have access to a CD burner you should think about pulling this hard drive and making a backup to store on the hard drive of the other computer, assuming you have the space to do so. That would be quicker than transferring over a cable.
Once that's done then you can try and figure out why your computer is shutting down every hour or so.

I personally think it is something with the power supply; however to get it to boot after shutdown I need to hold the spacebar and power button for like 6+ sec (motherboard in sleepmode maybe?? AMD shuttle something or other). OS is XP

A pretty easy solution would be using a null modem cable. Connect the 2 printer ports. You can copy files using INTERSVR and INTERLNK or make a direct connection and ftp the files across. Neither one is fast, but they work. I got my cable at http://www.cablesnmor.com/ (http://www.cablesnmor.com/) but I had to make an adaptor.
If you need INTERSVR, INTERLNK or a small ftp server pgm, send me an email.

I noticed the other day day CompUSA that they had an all-in-one USB networking device thinger. It's a box that has 2 USB plugs coming out of it. You just plug them into your 2 machines and they're connected.
I still think the fastest way, though, is to swap hard drives.

There is a USB hoast cable that lets each pc see the other drive its liek netwaorking but ONLY turns the other pc into a usb hdd basiclly might help u
-
yes, the cheapest and fastest solution would be to NIC cards and a cross over cable. Less than $40 and you'll get 100 mb/sec transfer speed.
-
Considering the OP said he knows nothing about networking the fastest and cheapest solution would be to do as SirPoonga suggested and pull the hard drive and put it in his second box for file tranfer/backup.

don't say biatch.

I agree that the CompUSA USB Network cables are the easiest cheapest option. The 8ft cable is 19.99.

actually lowes carries a 5 ft patch cable for 5.00

SirPoonga is correct. Just pull the drive, and hook it up to the other IDE cable. If there is a CD drive hooked to it currently, disconnect it for the time being. Back up the important stuff. Then fix the machine with the problems.
Networking the two computers - BAH! Simple solutions for simple problems.
