Title: im new to mame...PLEASE HELP!!!
Post by: _JMFR on December 04, 2008, 04:26:15 pm
ok, ive recently got the funds together, and decided im gonna build a mame cabinet. I was wanting to use it mainly for N64 emulation. I went to mamehouse.com and found control interfaces, but there aint enough buttons per player. Can anyone recomend me a good interface that can assign functions for EVERY button Including the D-pad? Im also thinking a trigger joystick would be great for the Z button.

Also, i need some advice about the best computer for gaming at a reasonable price. $500-800 dollars

Thanx to anyone who has advice! It's much appreciated

Your question has nothing to do with MAME.

I know its been said many times before, but its only worth repeating because its true:

Start reading the Wiki thoroughly. The same advice was given to me, and I'm glad I did. Take your time, and write down every new idea that you think of as you go along. Its better to have a laid out plan, than to try and piece your project together as you go along.

Good luck!

Your question has nothing to do with MAME.

So?  This isn't a mame-only board.  It's for BYO projects, mame, daphne, real arcade cabs, other emus, front ends, ect.  He's asking about input for a n64 emu, which is totally valid topic.

OP, I can't get to that "mamehouse.com" you mentioned, and never owned a n64.  How many buttons is "enough"?  Which n64 emu are you looking at using, or are you looking for that too?  Do you want a gamepad like controller, or an arcade-like joystick controller?

For a starting point, I think the U-HID (http://www.u-hid.com/) and GPwiz-40 (http://groovygamegear.com/webstore/index.php?main_page=index&cPath=76) (amoung others) have plenty of buttons.

so you want to build a cabinet to play n64 games with arcade joysticks and buttons?  the n64 controller has
3 triggers, dpad, 6 action buttons, start button, and an analog stick., so you would need 14 inputs per player, plus an analog stick.

just out of curiosity, why not play them with a gamepad?  it would be much more natural.  there are adapters that allow you to connect n64 controllers to your pc via usb, i have one and it worked ok.

a modded xbox is also a great option, the n64 emulator works relatively well, and the controller has enough buttons..although due to the wacky nature of the n64 controller, there is a little adjusting involved.

Agreed. Moving into the 5th generation era, emulators are available but the games aren't really suited for arcade integration. Sure, there are some great fighters available (Tekken Series, PS1), plus some good games that did not take advantage of the then-new analog controls. However, finding a suitable layout can be awkward with a pad numbering that many inputs as all developers had a different idea about the ideal joypad setup.

Building a cab with primarily this platform is not advised due to the relative complexity. If you build a regular digital input arcade for true classics that just happens to be powerful enough to run more advanced platforms for the few games suitable, then fair enough.  But with the less-than-perfect front-end friendly emulators for these platforms that are out there and the potential difficulties outlined above, you may be out of your depth.

I was referring to the topic title, which led to believe I could help with a MAME question, only to find an N64 question. I know this isn't a Mame-only board.
