Well I guess it’s time for me to start a thread here.
So far I don’t have much to show but I guess that’s what this thread is for, step by step.
Ok well here we go…
Attached are pictures of my control panel overlay. A friend of mine printed it out and Scott at Mameroom laid it and cut it.

Dude.
That rig is ...very powerful...
Have you been reading the overclocking thread? Can I ask why you chose that particular video card? :blah:
Oh well. I can totally get behind your CPO. Very nice.

Yeah, I saw that thread but have found really no need to overclock my system as of yet... Key word "yet".
I chose that video card because it was a good deal at the time I was buying the rest of the stuff shown here, in fact I bought it all in one shot other than the storage drives. Today I just purchased a 1.5tb drive for an external enclosure, current drive being the 1tb that is getting install in this box on the weekend.
At any rate, I sorta drifted off there. The video card is branded as ASUS but it is really ATI I guess either built or spec'd to ASUS's likings. It's a great card and I would have gone with the 4870 at the time but I believe it was close to 100 bucks more, not sure what it is currently. Since I don't plan on using this for PC gaming at all other than new Street Fighter when it comes out, this is even somewhat overkill for my emulation project... However for me, better too much than too little. >:D It's a good card and is working well (component out) right now to my HD TV until I get my cab. in place.
ps. I like your avatar. I met Bruce Campbell a couple of times, nice guy. I have also met a lot of other actors from the Evil Dead movies including Ted Raimi but never Sam. :(
Not sure if you like Horror Movies or not but I am a big fan and not to get off track here, feel free to PM me if you would like to talk more about them. :) Thanks!

Didnt you purchase the UAII pre-cut cabinet from mameroom.com? Have you received it yet and if so is it put together with your monitor?
Christmas is fast approaching. That being said, if you can get your control panel wired and your software/FE all setup prior to the cabinet/monitor showing up it shouldnt take very long to get the cabinet pieced together. I'm didnt put my panel together but I am sure that will take the longest time other than maybe setting up your FE.

Yes and No. Yes I bought the UAII but they are putting it together and installing the monitor. From what I am told the only thing I will have to do is install the CP and PC when it arrives. Oh, I need to buy monitor glass and install that myself too. There are a few other things I will be taking on myself as well, marquee, side art etc...
Mameroom is also putting together the control panel and all of the wiring; the hold up right now is the Electric Ice buttons from Groovy Gamer Gear.
Current OS is Vista 64.
Two front ends are currently sat up; everything listed below is sat up in Game Ex and some in HyperSpin.

Question, where did you get your pinball emulator's from? For some strange reason I cant seem to find anything on them. Can you provide a link?
Thanks!
You'll have the mother of all arcade cabinets.
-
Sure...
Future Pinball: http://www.futurepinball.com/
Visual Pinball: http://www.randydavis.com/vp/intro.htm
PinMame: http://pinmame.retrogames.com/
Future Pinball works on its own.
Visual Pinball and PinMame work together. Visual Pinball emulates the tables and PinMame emulates the score boards/ displays.
Let me know if you have any questions getting them sat up. ;)

Do you notice a huge difference in boot time using that 1000 RPM Raptor drive?

Do you notice a huge difference in boot time using that 1000 RPM Raptor drive?
It takes 20 to 25 seconds from the time I turn on my PC until I am in Windows, not bad. Keep in mind this too, I have the first generation Raptor drive as well. There are newer, faster models out already but you do pay a high price for speed and certainly less space than most other hard drives on the market right now.
Compared to the other PCs I own, by far this is the fastest all around but it is close to bleeding edge technology too. With that said there is always going to be something better.
I think when it really shined was install Vista, about 20 mins if I recall correctly.
All and all so far its a nice, fast drive.

Thanks for the info, it sounds like a worthwhile purchase. I really don't mind the less space on the hard drive. As a matter of fact I prefer my OS hard drives to be small, as I have always saved all my data on a separate drive in the event of a crash. It seems to me that they could keep some of the cost down if they were to make a super fast drive no larger than say 80 gigs or so. I only say 80 gigs because I have no idea what Vista's requirements are.... I refuse to go that route yet.

I think my Raptor drive is right around 140 gigs. I agree with you on the OS as I use Ghost to back that drive up to another hard drive. The only think I ever install on my C drive is the OS and programs, I never keep storage files there, that is why I have those other drives for roms which get back up too but in a different way.
The Raptor drives have good reviews most any where you look so if space is not an issue, I'd say go for it!
One other thing, the future seems to be hinting towards solid state drives so you may want to do some reading up on them as well for OS install.
Let me know if I can be of anymore help and good luck. If you buy a Raptor drive, let me know what you think down the road. Maybe Santa Claus will bring you one. It's never too late to ask. ;)

So I downloaded Future pinball last night and their free SciFi table and was wondering how do you get the emulator to show your score? There isnt a table view option to fully show the backbox and the emulator doesnt have any other window showing your score. Pinball is all about points so if it doesnt show points that kinda stinks. I must be missing something. Anyway, I dont want to highjack your thread so if can help maybe just PM me or if you reply here I'll leave it at your reply.
Thanks

It's time to rebuild my Home theater PC... It doesn't even like iTunes anymore, so perhaps Santa could bring me one or a duel core processor. I appreciate any help and insight into the raptor drives. Yep, I'm waiting for those solid state drives. What I'm really waiting on is Instant access memory.... that's going to be wicked! http://www.wired.com/wired/archive/8.04/mram.html
In the meantime I plan on doing some more research into this.....http://www.custompc.co.uk/news/605172/asrock-instant-boot-loads-windows-in-four-seconds.html

Of course they have been talking about Instant access memory for a very long time now, you would think they would have some progress by now.

I am 100% it shows the score so I think you are missing something or maybe for some reason that table does not have that feature. I don't have Future Pinball installed here on my work PC but I would be more than happy to get back to you tonight or this weekend from my home system.
In the meantime check out the Metal Slug Future Pinball Game and if you look, you can see that it does display your score and I also know it tracks hi scores as well.

Yea I'm not getting that top score screen although I can clearly see the insert coin, start game at the top before I hit start. Once I hit start though it disappears. Maybe the free Scifi doesnt have this setup.
The only other thing I could say is maybe you could take a print screen of your video options preferences screen. Maybe I havent "checked" the right box or something.
Thanks
Did you design that table? Pretty cool.

Ok, I did some checking and the game you speak of has score keeping but cannot been seen when you are playing the game it seems. Other tables like Metal Slug are designed better so this feature can be viewed when playing the game, as shown in the video above. I'd say give a few other tables a try before passing judgment overall.
I did not design the Metal Slug table.
Here is another hint that I am sure you figured out already but once the tables are loaded, if you press F1 through F8 (I think it is) you can play the table at different angles.
-
OK yea I confirmed the Scifi just doesnt display video. I was able to find two other tables that do show the score so no problems there. I discovered the different viewing angles in the video preferences screen.
My only other question I guess is where do you find all these different tables? I ran across the other two I downloaded but no others as of yet. Is there one good site or just a bunch of different sites with a few each?
Any way, I like it regardless so thanks for the link.
-
The full set of tables is about 7 and 1/2 gigs. Do you download torrent files at all? ;)
Check your PM's.

Installed.
Hard Drive: (Rom Storage) Seagate Barracuda 7200.11 ST31000340AS 1TB 7200 RPM SATA 3.0Gb/s
Controller Card: SYBA SD-SATA-4P PCI SATA
I now have close to 3TB of Hard Drive Rom Space! ;D

Any reason you went with Seagate over Western Digital (Caviar Black) 1TB drive?
-
Any reason you went with Seagate over Western Digital (Caviar Black) 1TB drive?
Yes.
SG has a 5 year warranty vs. 3 from WD.
Brand wise I have had hard drives fail from all manufactures but more from WD than any other company as a whole and who knows, maybe because I just have owned more of that brand. :dunno Once they start to make the dreaded clicking noise, be ready to replace ASAP. :banghead: However with that said, I already had a SG drive start to fail with this project which I have since warranted with SG, fairly hassle free.
So you may ask then, why did I buy WD for my main drive. Well at one time WD was the best in my books and the Raptor Drives have received rave reviews and there is really nothing like them unless you want to run SCSI so I went out on a limb, call it a extra live. ;)
-
Yeah the 10K rpm Raptors make a good OS drive...
-
Oh, and FYI... WD has 5 year warranties now.

That is one impressive machine.

That is one impressive machine.
Well I am a firm believer in you get what you pay for and as far as PC's go, you can never really have too powerful of a machine. >:D When I buy PC stuff, I like to buy mid to high end but not the absolute latest thing out, seems to fall into a good price point in general. I can safely say I have 1500 to 2 large wrap up in the PC as it is right now.
-
Here are some updated pictures. I did not take them and will take better ones once I get it.
CP is a little blurry but you get the idea. ;)
-
Awesome CPO!
-
Thanks.
Just one more day away, comes Tuesday! :woot
-
Still a work in progress but here on some updated pix after a few headaches.
Smoked glass will be here on Monday for infront of the monitor.
I think I got a jacked RGB board and that is why in the one picture all the buttons are the same color but one. Pretty sure a new board is on the way, hoping it will correct the problem.
-
Lookin' Good! :applaud:
... you're going to have some programming fun with all those lighted buttons.
Love the panel graphics... Metal Slug (all versions) is one of my favorite games.
-
Very nice, Great job :applaud:
-
Thanks Guys.
Smoked monitor glass came today, should have some more pix soon!
-
Very NICE!!!
-
Here is the glass; I will take some more pix when installed.
It came from One Day Glass; they did an excellent job shipping it. I live in PA and they are in Washington State, it was packed extremely well.

Specs on the glass? Grey tint, how thick, etc?

Sure.
27 x 25 x 3/16
Tempered Glass
Solar Grey
Pencil Grind (All Edges)

I HIGHLY recommend smoked glass! I don't know what it is but to me, it makes everything look better behind it. I am extremely happy with how it looks.
Smoked Glass Installed and Framing Matte cut to hide wood boarders.
I decided not to secure the glass at this point; it is such a tight fit and with it being at an angle, there is no way it is coming out without some sorta fight.
I will be keeping an eye on things over the next few weeks as I play it but honestly, I don't think its going to need anything to hold it in since it is such a perfect fit. Even if it did come forward at the top, it would hit the speaker grills and stop... Very Doubtful.
