Title: Christmas tree lights/LEDs for coin door?
Post by: Snowblindz on December 01, 2008, 03:58:48 am
Anyone tried this?  Would it be crazy?  I know its pretty ghetto.. but it seems like it would be easier than any other method.  I don't have a PC in my cabinet.. I'm using an Xbox 360 atm

It may be a little dim, and burn out a lot, but you could get 500 replacements for around $20. The only tricky part is supplying it power, and at the right voltage. You aren't going to be able to use the same transformer that you would normally use.

I don't think power would be an issue as if they are any thing like the xmas lights I know they will be powered from a wall wart/transformer.

I really don't think they would be bright enough though. I imagine you only have a 110/230v volt supply available since you are just running a 360. If I was you I would find an old wall wart that gives out something like 12v at around 0.5A and then hack it and use it to power some 'normal' LEDs for the purpose. Have a look in [this thread (http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php?topic=87092.0)] for some options.

I've actually done this. I just made a simple strip of plastic to stick the bulbs through, then used aluminum tape to secure it to my home-made coin reject buttons (made of folded frosted plastic from a school folder type thingy):

Cost of lights: $7.99
Cost of plastic folder: $2.99

I just plugged it right into my smart strip, and it comes on when my PC is powered on  ;D
