Title: Wii console button broke
Post by: hypernova on November 29, 2008, 02:32:14 pm
Can't take a picture of it right now, but while moving to a new house, my Wii was dropped.  Right on the faceplate.  Now the eject button is not working.  I've already cracked the sucker open, and determined that the button is completely broke.

Problem is that it's a tiny button.  Really tiny if you haven't seen one yet.  It's about 1/3 to 1/2 the size of a pea.  I need a replacement.  I refuse to spend $80 through Nintendo to have it repaired unless it's absolutely necessary.  I have no problem affixing another on there with some solder.  But where can I find this part?  Already checked Radio Shack, but they don't have anything that small.  Been looking online, but either I don't know the proper keywords, or I can't find anything like it.

I'll take a picture of it at home and upload it if anyone needs a picture.  Right now, I have no 'net at home until Monday.

Have kids?  Start looking through the toybox.  I have scavenged so many tiny momentary contact switches from cheap toys it ain't even funny.  It seems every toy you get now has 20 buttons and 20 LEDs...

Only once... and that was when they broke mine to begin with.  :)  My kids go through so many toys it isn't even funny so parting an RC car they left out in the weather for a month isn't a problem.

They will have it, or something close enough, search the catalog under "Switches"

They have a pretty good selection, but they have nothing on Mouser (http://www.mouser.com) or Digikey (http://www.digikey.com). I used to shop at their branch store until management closed the store and sold it off to HFE Electronics (http://hfeelectronics.com/). They generally have standard components like resistors, capacitors or 74xx IC's or they have some really bizarre off the wall parts that are almost impossible to find a use for. If you can, try them but don't expect to find the exact part you need.

Try to pick up a broken wii on the cheap. Rip it apart and you have a button.

True.  I can spend a couple hours in the store in San Jose just dreaming up what I might be able to do with some of it and then running off 50' of assorted wire "just in case".

Broken Wii's are anything but cheap.  They run $60 on ebay, and Nintendo will fix it, including the itty bitty solder job, for $80.  My mother said she'd pay since she dropped it.

Seems like finding a needle in the haystack, or like ten haystacks.  And I don't even know the proper name for the switch.

EDIT: hell, i didnt see that. Dont touch that thing! get  Nintendo to do it! dont risk it if you could get it done by pros at no cost to you! unless you already voided the warranty...

Warranty was already expired anyways.  Already sent it in.  Hopefully will have it back before Christmas.
