Title: if you squint, you can just make them out
Post by: danny_galaga on November 21, 2008, 10:56:49 am

ive been scanning some old pics. this is an old fav of mine. a friend was visiting from canada at the time and she actually stayed an extra day just so i could get my GFPT and go for a scenic flight with me (",)
a general flight progress test is kinda like a provisional license for cars. in this case, you can fly on your own within the boundaries of the training area. now for darwin that encompasses most of darwin and a bit of the outskirts and across the bay (must be one of the few places in the world where you have to fly across water to get to a training area).

anyway, the day after i passed, i took my girlfriend and my two canadian friends for a scenic flight. i also told my parents that i would fly over our house at around 9am. actually we lived in a satellite town of darwin. when we got to my place, i pulled some flap and did an orbit of the house.

ok, so if you look at the starboard wingtip you can see two buildings 'growing' out of it. that is the school my dad was janitor for. in the 'V' that they form is a bit of lawn, and then a car park. with me so far? in the carpark, that little white stripe is the school bus. ok, next to the school bus, two tiny little dots. thats my folks waving at us. dad is a bit of a 'stiff upper lip' type, but mum said he was beaming  :)

Is your dad so stubborn that this is the only way you can get a picture of him?

Better to do aerial photos in a helicopter, with a gyro-stabilization cage you can get pretty decent shots using medium format or a 35mm.

Or you can fly in the plane or helicopter with the door off secured with a tether, and lean out and shoot - my favorite way!  ;D

you can use this camera for your open door shots:

I used a larger camera for 9x9 plate images, but sadly it has gone the way of the dodo.

I could show you some images I took, which is much better in definition, but most do not belong to me anymore.  I have a bunch of negatives but no way to scan them.  But here is one that I cropped from a panoramic view of the Strip just keeping the Mandalay Bay.  Shot 5K AGL.  Definition is still clear after this 4th generation copy still over 6mb in size.   :o

Shot in Helicopter with door off on a tether (standing on the skids).  ;D

I also had a cool video Shoot of the Strip in VHS C I will have to put on Divx some day.
