(not my site)...
Seems like a great deal to me...
www.compgeeks.com (http://www.compgeeks.com)
HP Pavilion Athlon XP2400+ mini tower, 128mb ddr, 60gb hd, cdrom, modem, firewire, 10/100 eithernet, ac97 audio, video.. $330 (referb)
Only question I would have is if it had a AGP slot to replace the video card... but many wouldn't care for emulation only purposes.
But with a quick search from HP's website. The pavilion 700 and greater series are the only ones that allow for a 2.4+ processor. And these seem to all have AGP slots... So it probably (hopefully) does.
Anyone looking for another machine... it might be a great place to start.
I'm considering it for an office machine and let me use my main pc as a pure game machine.
<edit> Thanks for noticing the mistype

Hi LilWolf,
Might want to change the title (2.4 XP, not 3.4 XP).
Pricewatch has 2.4 XP systems starting at $231 with a smaller HD and not HP, though.

*shrug* (sorry Rampy)

AGP slot is important.
And I can't get any of these companies to support the price they mention... I've tried 2 so far (so the any is limited)... but they all go to a build your config page... and they end up being about 350.
The other has a bunch of options that you probably don't need... (firewire, pci modem)
but your right... not as good of a deal as I thought..

From what I understand, if you call them, they're supposed to honor Pricewatch's price. Although Rampy recommends checking resellerratings.com
And I have seen companies selling mobo's for low prices, but then it says OEM (add $10 to make this a retail product with driver CD's etc.) Which wouldn't be a problem if the drivers were available on the web, but . . .

I found a particular seller on ebay who has like 15000 good feedback and sells barebones machines for under $100. (By that I mean they never go over $100.) Haven't bought from him, but it looks like a good start for a machine. They come with motherboard, processor, and case in different configurations. I don't care so much about the case, but I suppose you have to get it that way. I have all the extra parts, anyways so maybe I'll do that. The Intel machines are all celerons, but he has AMD setups as well. His name is "ezbpc".

No HD in those systems, but yeah, great prices and he's using ASROCK mobos (subsidiary of ASUS). Definitely something to consider.
Thanks.

Well I've got all the extra HD's, CD-ROM's, memory, video cards, ethernet cards, etc... All I really need is the basics.

Understood, me too, just meant that these were less equipped than the initial systems. Still great deals, though.

While I agree that the price is more than fair for the barebone kits, the shipping is unjustified. $48 for ground shipping is appaling. Getting a combo deal for $75 and then turning around and paying 3/4 of that price to ship it, well frankly I dont see it. Even if the weight adds up to that price, I will personally look for more alternatives. I am amazed at all the good deals out there, only to be let down by inflated shipping costs.

Not sure if you guys have Fry's Electronics were you live but there is one near me.
You can get a barebone system pretty cheap, like $150 or so. Also a mobo with 8x AGP that supports up to 2.4 p4 processor is only $59.
That would be a good store to check out.

There are sellers on Ebay that sell some Pentium 2.4's at about $350 (though with $75 or so shipping), that is with all the components other than a monitor. Here is an example:

I'm tempted...

Lilwolf,
Be advised, that 2400XP AMD processor is probably arount a 1.9 GHZ maachine, NOT 2.4 GHZ.
Also,
I purchase my Mame machine from EZBPC, a Barebone 2000XP with an ASRock Motherboard for $135 shipped to me and I have not had any problems with it. Bought RAM, HD and Video card all new with mail in rebates and waited for sales. Probably spent around $240 for a working tower. Works great and would highly recommend going with that ebayer. hope this helps.

Trust me... I know about AMD's mhz ratings...
And I know that Intel is the one who made them start it...
For a long time, Intel was removing optimizations from their chips, to increase the core clock speeds... This made them look like they where faster then they where. People didn't realize this, and where buying more expensive, slower chips..
In almost all speed tests, they are almost the same.... until recently.
After Intel came up with the faster memory bandwidth, their chips couldn't hack it... But now they are faster then AMD's per listed clock cycle. They where faster then their slightly older version with the same speed....
BUT... also remember this.
in emulation, AMD's have ALWAY's done better per clock cycle (listed... not real) then their intel countparts. Intels do better on 3d games....
but all in all... AMD's are hands down... the best price / performance....
So if moneys no object.. Go Intel
If it is... Go AMD
If performance / watt or no fan is... Go VIA

My 400 MHz AMD chugs through most games without a problem. I used it cuz it was free, but it played lots of games that many people complain about having trouble with (like Metal Slug) without a hiccup.

AlanS17, What are the rest of the specs on that machine?
