Title: How many cds do you own?
Post by: xbon on November 16, 2008, 02:02:57 am
Ok guys dont want to blow my own trumpet but i want to know how many cds people on here own when i mean cds i mean legit - legal non pirated cds either download or disc.

I personally own 22,000+ of the things 22,000 was the number back in April i buy then every week new,2nd hand from charity shops or car boot sales etc.

I have been buying them since 1983 has a teenager i was a dj and actually stopped buying them for 3years due to several factors...

I appeared on local tv a few years back with my collection..

I have just started ripping them for my jukebox, leaving unknowns out of the equasion.

About 120-130 albums, both in CD and Download format (I mean fully albums I brought on-line from their original artist, not singles). Not that much like others have, that property the type of music I hear.

Most of my music is not illegal, but I have mostly either game music (snes, C64, Amiga, MD as examples) and demoscene underground music which is friendly available on various sites.

I do hear popular music when I are not my home and is not against it.

I've got about 1,000 actual discs but I haven't bought one in about 5 years.

I sold all my pressed purchased CDs a few years back. So impractical, never got used so why have them around.

I'm moving and just yesterday I was carrying around boxes of CD's. I'm thinking of throwing them in the landfill. Who uses CDs these days?

Well over the weekend having a well earned rest i decided to save money i wont be buying any more cds, probably legally downloading them, that way then i can only downlad the tracks i need rather than the ones i dont and it should get rid of the problem i have, where i keep buying different compilation cds and 90% of the compilation is compiled with stuff i already own...

And also coming a across a few rotten cds has also persuaded me to stop buying them.

Ripped everything I own a few years back and they are wasting space in my garage somewhere.
Of course I've got digital copies so I'm not worried about losing any of my files.

Why not:

Sell them to a music/pawn shop
Drop them off at the loca Salvation Army or Goodwill
Make someone's day each day, for one week, by randomly giving them a few CDs of stuff they would like
Donate them to the local library

That's a lot better than throwing them away for future archiologist to find ;)

Maybe 200. I stopped buying them in stores. Order them online if they are under 10 euro. Buy less then a few years ago. When they arrive, first thing is to trash the plastic sleeve. I put the book with the CD in a CD wallet. Not the ugly black zipper style, but plastic "klapper" style (the dutch word is not in the dutch-english dictionary), with the CD on top and the book below. The back-sheets are put in a box, so I can always assemble an original CD case with a blank plastic case. Too bad the HEMA stopped selling these great CD "books".

Those CD Wallets are what lead to me suffering so bad with that fungus. It seems to spread from disc to disc as it was a few pages that were infected and it was clear that it had started on one page and spread out to the neighbouring ones because the infection wasn't as bad on the other pages.

Not a good week.  The ongoing economic situation, hundreds of earthquakes occurring in Yellowstone park, and now learning about this CD-eating fungus.  I guess I need to go back to jewel cases, at least for my DVD backups of my FLAC and MP3 files.

Thanks for the heads up that lead to interesting reading on other sites.

Do you have a picture of your fungus? Never heard of that phenomenon.

Here's a good picture of a fungus-damaged CD.

...from a good article about the issue.

That article is pretty old, but the web page mentions it was updated twice since written.

You also have to watch out for any signs of "pitting". I had one of the larger cd cases have some sort of chemical reaction (for lack of better desrciption) that ate up a bunch of my data cd's before I caught onto what was going on. Where the cd made contact with the felt like sleeve they became seriously pitted. Enough to actually see and feel the pits.
Didn't matter what type or brand of disc either.
Makes it kinda hard to trust saving files on disc just to have them get screwed up anyways.

I have had heaps of pressed CDs develop (or come with, not sure) some pinprick like holes in the foil layer concentrically about 12mm in from the outside edge. Uppon looking at them, all were made bu D.A.T.A (australia) and in the early-mid 90s

My trainspotting soundtrack is so bad that it actually skips when playing. Good thing the internet is one giant backup of popular music.
