Title: Help a Noob with Daphne
Post by: garnerb350 on November 13, 2008, 04:30:53 pm
Hey everyone,  I'm in the process of building my first arcade cab. ( I'm using MAME)...Well I really want to install Daphne and I need the laserdisk, blah . blah .blah....

My question is: Can I just use the Dragon's Lair 20th Anniversary Edition video game from Digital Leisure....

Can Daphne use the 20th ann.edition?

http://www.amazon.com/Dragons-Lair-20th-Anniversary-pc/dp/B0002MHEZU/ref=pd_bbs_sr_2?ie=UTF8&s=videogames&qid=1226611220&sr=8-2

Or does anyone have any suggestions?...

I dont have internet or downloading capabilities at home and I mostly use my work computer to read the forums... :hissy:

Thanks

Brad

The easiest/cheapest option is to buy a set of DVDs on ebay.

eBay Link (http://cgi.ebay.com/Dragons-Lair-1998-DVD_W0QQitemZ330284931187QQcmdZViewItemQQptZUS_DVD_HD_DVD_Blu_ray?hash=item330284931187&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14&_trkparms=66%3A2|65%3A15|39%3A1|240%3A1318)

You will still have to download a lot of files so if your PC does not have internet access you are SOL.

There are alternatives but its far too complicated to save $5 IMHO.

Thanks guys for the input.  Each day since July since I began, I am learning more and more.  So far, I am running Mame 32 v 114 and I have all the roms with it, and I am trying to get Daphne and maybe pinball.
My cpu is a old Dell Dimension 4600, and Ive got a 21 " monitor...so far lately, Im setting my frontend up and getting all the bells and whistles straight. It sucks without internet, but everybody knows that bills come first... I have a friend who is wanting to build one also, but he is (scared) watching me to see how I do mine. He has been helping me with using the net to get the software and etc. Probley after the holidays, I'll get the wood and start building.  Once again, thanks for the  help and input.

If you need help finding the other Daphne games, drop me a PM.

I can't help you with Space Ace, Dragon's Lair or Thayer's Quest  though.

this is what you need...

http://www.laserarchive.com/ddl/

However you WILL NEED A INTERNET CONNECTION.  (the faster the better as these are some large files and can take 24 hrs + to down load.)

you will still need to buy the dragons lair disc / s   from digital leisure in order to get dragon's lair working in daphnee, as digital L have some sort of a deal/ agreement with the people that created daphnee ...you can get dragons lair ready to run , but before you can run it the first time you need to insert the disc to verify that you have the right to run the soft ware.

They should just have a single license that you can buy. I gave up setting up daphne because they have just repeatedly made is an enormous hassle. I wish they sold the DVD pack on their website, with serial numbers, and called it good. Not go to amazon, then go to ebay, then go to the ftp, then wait a million hours for downloads, then set up the games, then get error messages, then delete the game you just bought and go buy another.

I've never had any of these issues, particularly since the release of 1.0 . Just download the Daphne package, run it, it does everything...except the Digital Leisure games, in which case the information is above (or elsewhere...). I set mine up a couple years ago with only 256k. Anything less than that, well, who has dial-up anymore? Who's accessing the web from the library??

I would prefer you had the original laserdiscs and ripped the mpeg from them.

Man it sure is good to find others here that can help... Everybody at home that I ask for help are like
" You are building a whuttt? ". My wife  ( I love her so) said that she would get me the Dragon's Lair DVDs from Digital Lesiure. Found them on Amazon for cheap.( NOTE: I  said DVD, not PC-ROM).

Now correct me if I am wrong...but with the DVDs....This is where I am confused because I have heard differnt stories....But if I install Daphne, then drop the DVD in the drive, will it work?

As for finding the orignal laserdisk....man the last laserdisk i saw lying around was a Smokey and the Bandit...and I was 12 years old...now going on 33.

As of now, Im just going through my MAME games and setting them up on Maximus Arcade and setting up my jukebox. I tried messing around with Visual Pinball, ( dont let me get into that story...) but it confused me more...

Hey, *I* still have Laserdiscs ... get offa my lawn!

The answer to your Dragon's Lair DVD question is, I think, both YES and NO.

You need compatible A/V files and those are not on the DVD. Having the DVD, however, provides you with legitimate access to download those compatible A/V files. So, if you have a nice connection to teh innertubes, then everything will be groovy. If not, well, not so much.

If you have the PC-ROM versions, IIRC, you can use a variety of tools and extract the desired files.

You may want to look at finding yourself some decent net access (whether at work or elsewhere) for your emulation computer with Daphne installed and the DVDs handy.

LOL!   I'm not putting down laserdisks...lol... I miss them....I meant to say that they are VERY rare around home.

Ok back to Daphne....I dont have internet at home...So If my wife gets me the DVDs and then i take them to someone who does have internet, download Daphne....Daphne downloads the proper files for me...I then transfer the folder to my usb stick, run home with the DVDs and transfer ithe files to the computer at home...pop the DVD in the drive.....it should work? :dizzy:

you need a connection to verify the dvd. you would need to activate it, then copy it and take it home, i think id be tempted to take my pc along to my friends and do it directly to my hard drive.
you can do all the downloading without the dvd , the dvd just allows the software to run

dragons lair alone is about 3 gigs, took me a weekend to download the torrent. not sure of you can limit the download speed , but if thats possible, the best bet would be to network to his pc and let it download to your pc at a rate that wont bother him, youll be without your pc though obviously for that period

It really irks me to see people download off torrent games that are still being sold.  I am not counting abandonware, but Dragon's Lair is still being sold and can be unlocked via Daphne if you don't want to mess with frame files and roms.  I see Dragon's Lair sell on Ebay for $10.

I know it goes on in private, but to condone downloading like that on this message board from a senior member is unacceptable IMHO.

Yeah, but ark, this is LEGAL downloading via a torrent (you have to own the discs in question) -- Digital Leisure both condones and supports it!!!!

EDIT:

* In cooperation with our friends at Digital Leisure - owners of their Dragon's Lair, Dragon's Lair II, Space Ace, and Thayer's Quest DVDs are able to download versions for use with DAPHNE  - right from the loader!!

The Dragon's Lair 3Gb Torrent file Polaris mentions is not the legal torrent you mention Cheffo.  :police:

But would clarification from the Moderator be helpful?:

5. Nothing illegal! Do I even need to explain this one? Need a ROM to repair an arcade board you own? Fine to talk about. Need a ROM to complete your MAME collection? Don't bother to post here. If someone posts such a request, please don't answer it -- no direct answers, no hints, no private messages.

OK - looks like there's a legitimate download authorization for purchasers of the DVD. Kindly point only to those links if you link at all.

i seem to remember some way of reporting to daphne of any digital leisure dvd you own, and once they checked it was a digital leisure dvd they would add it as one of the dvds that can verify the LEGAL torrent.
my pc with my daphne torrents died so i cant look into it but i'm sure its the case.

DISCLAIMER  i own legitimate dvds as discussed in  this thread (http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php?topic=73549.msg776400#msg776400) that allow me to use the legal torrents

ps yes it is the case, just found  this  (http://www.daphne-emu.com/dvd_scan.php) regarding use of any dgital leisure dvd.
from  this thread (http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php?topic=74907.0) on getting the ddl to work , some good info in the thread

EDIT when i say any dvd i mean any of the dragpns lair versions they have released

I believe that the correct answer to the OP's question is yes.

Without an internet connection, you will have to use the older 0.99.7 version of Daphne and use the dvd2daph utility to convert the DVD into files that Daphne can use. This will not make DL2 work, only DL and SA.

Prior to version 1.0, that's what I did to get Daphne to work. I have the 20th anniversary edition. The games are semi-playable on any DVD player such as a PS/2, but the lag between scenes is so bad (especially on DL2) that the games are not fun to play on the DVD player.

ignore everyone dude

just download every game via DDL & buy the magnificent 3 dvd's of controversy on ebay for like $5-$10 each

then open each game to make sure it works, daphene will want to confirm & check in & etc to verify......be patient, it will want to download even more crap actually & hopefully a seeder is being nice that day.

afterwards open each game to make sure it works.

then hook your buddies pc up to the your pc via Ethernet cables, make the daphne folder on his a shared folder & link the two PC's together to pull data from one HD to the next

on the arcade pc, go to daphne (not downloader, just loader) & click file, then preferences, then DISABLE: incoming connection test, bittorrent to verify, auto downloading & latest build auto download to remove that damn auto link update garbage.

then highlight a game, click the game tab up top, under laserdisc click config laser disc, choose to manually install the missing files & beneath that browse to the vldp or whatev folder the game is in, pick the games dedicated folder & then make the txt file the choice (well, its your only file seen by the browse function).

then go to the video tab, enable full screen, choose your resolution & in the same blade go to the video tab.

you have to do that for every game

Saint pinball blesses you
