Title: D9800 Convergence (is this normal?)
Post by: Mickelonis on November 12, 2008, 12:41:18 am
I just got my D9800 in the mail today from XArcade....

You tell me if this is normal, this is my first official arcade monitor, so I could be wrong, but this convergence seems horrible to me....

Click link to see (image is large and I didn't want the forum thread to look bad)

http://genesiscodex.com/convergence.jpg

The red in the upper right is off (red is to the left a bit)

The blue in th eupper left is off (blue is off to the left a bit

Opinions?

Thanks guys!

Not sure about the convergence (doesn't look too terrible) but the geometry is definitely 1000 times better than my Betson!

what does it look like with a game screen?

Last night I installed soft 15hz, played some games and DEAR GOD! I almost want to say they look better than the originals.

I will soon do a complete review of this monitor for you all. At first, I was a bit "blah" but after 15hz was installed, this monitor blows me away.... absolutely stunning!

what would be good is photos showing games shots and grid patterns,it nice to hear someone happy with a tri sync monitor

Mickelonis:

I would be VERY interested in a review and as grantspain mentioned some screenshots of various games. This monitor is my #1 pick at the moment for my next project purchase.

Please keep us posted! :)

Really, what is "good" convergence for a monitor new out of the box?  I've never seen a monitor over 19" that had perfect convergence, and it seems that the bigger the monitors get, the worse can be expected in image quality.  Or am I just imagining things?

For example, my little Sony Trinitron PVM monitor has seemingly exact convergence.  I cannot detect any trace along any line in a grid pattern.

My GDM trinitron is a 20" model and has only a little big of misconvergence, noticable only in the corners of the screen.

My 19" TV is pretty good, with just a little bit in the corners.

My 37" Mitsubishi monitor is misconverged a little bit on the blue and red colors in the right hand side of the screen.

My 37" Toshiba TV is just horrible.  Green is misaligned  just a little bit over practically the whole image, with red and blue in some spots as well.

BUT, even with the misalignment, all of these monitors display very good picture when playing games.  I think looking at a grid will annoy you and make you think there is something wrong with your monitor, even though you have probably been looking at lower quality images for most of your life.

I just picked up a D9400, and i Love it! :)

The only difference between the D9400 and the D9800 is curved or flat CRT.

Mick, that convergence ain't bad, really. Further, following what JB said, it takes a really off convergence to notice things are loopy, and basically this manifests as doubles of images or text. For example, the text of the attract mode of a vector game like Black Widow: on my monitor, text that is red has a slight double up-right that is blue. It also seems to depends on the resolution being displayed; native res games it's harder to notice.

Hey Mickelonis,

I concur with the others, the convergence is actually quite good for the size of the monitor. Like you, when I first picked up
my D9200 I had some concerns about convergence and geometry but, in reality, it does not affect gamplay at all. We hardcore
gamers might recognize a little doubling-up in some areas (as Ummon notes) but even I don't notice it anymore - don't sweat it.

Breaker.

Hey all, thanks for your informative replies... I will write up a good review of this monitor in the coming week.

I overreacted when it came to convergence and I didn't even check to see what it looked like in games. So, I loaded up simpsons tonight and took some pictures....

Alot of the pics are bad quality, I did not sort through them, but there are a few good quality pix in here as well.

The pix at the end are test patterns.... There's about 20-30 pix in the .zip file...

For those of you interested, check it out...

I'll post more in detail stuff later..

I was looking at the post because I'm debating on an upgrade too- Is $399.95 the normal price ?

Looking forward to your review .
