Title: First Cabinet - 95% construction complete - *Pictures*
Post by: Dillsta on November 11, 2008, 02:24:37 am
Hi guys,
I got the idea of making an arcade machine off a couple of my dad's work mate and thought why not give it a try. so i did a bit of research on the net and found this place (awesome site by the way). so for the last few weeks I have been setting up an old computer while waiting for my controls to come (took 5 weeks :() and finally they come last week. so i just made a practice control panel (as it is my first time) and put most of my buttons in and wired up. Then i though i make a thread just in case i run into any problems along the way.

My mock up Panel

Ok now i know its been a while but i finally got around to start building the cabinet, So today me and my father got and started. We didn't accomplish much but we have Decided on a lot of thing to do with the building of the cabinet, mostly because our monitor weighs around 30-40kgs. But today we did manage to draw up and cut out the two sides and and glue and nail on some support beams.
I didn't get around to take any pictures but tomorrow if i feel the need i Will.  :D

Today after waking up and having to catch my grandparents bull, me and me dad set out and continued where we left off yesterday. Today we got the two sides up along with the back piece. We also cut out the CP and the base.

looking good!
I take it that is a playhouse in the background? Or do you live in Ky?  :laugh2:

My suggestion at this point would be to leave enough room between player 1 and 2 controls to put a trackball later.
Chances are you will want to add a trackball at some point.
My first cabinet I did not leave enough room for the TB, even though it was a big panel like the one you have laid out. This spring my project is to re do that CP to include a trackball and maybe a spinner. I will have to remake the entire panel.
You may want to go ahead and install a trackball now. It would be a lot easier at this stage.

Here is a blog I kept on the third machine I built, might help you out...

Check Ebay. Just be aware that you may have to re-build it with new rollers and bearings. Ive bought 4 off ebay and had to rebuild one.
It's no big deal to rebuild it if you have too.

Well another weekends gone by and we were a little lazy and didn't do much, but we did get a few little things done in the end. We put the shelf in and all the supports for the monitor, which turned out kinda hard because of the angle that we have the monitor on and the fact that we have the back panel on made it kinda hard but we got it right in the end,. we also ended up cutting out some panels.

Pictures will be up soon....

I was thinking about doing a sort of lightening theme, we have a few friends that are artists (and where i live 80% people are artists lol) so ill probably ask them tell help me out.

i was thinking about ordering side art etc.. but this is a hell of a lot cheaper.
