Title: SATA II Solid State Drive - Thoughts?
Post by: DeLuSioNal29 on November 03, 2008, 06:25:04 pm
A friend of mine forwarded me this link.  I thought it was pretty cool.  Reminds me of the "Hard Cards" they had way back when.

These could be useful for a bartop setup due to their small size.  Although it's under $300 (still pricey), eventually, like all things electronic, these prices will fall in the future.

I think Goz had a 32gb one for sale in BST thread, if you were looking for a more reasonable price.  From what I have heard they load things really quick and have no seek time, but write times can get really high.

Wait.

Not too long (maybe this time next year), but the next generation SSDs will be significantly faster and likely more reliable.

i'm a software engineer working on some firmware for a company's line of SSD products, and the stuff we're playing with now is making the stuff that's been released look like a joke.

I'm wondering what happened to the shaker drive, with hundreds of heads.

I'd say that too, but I'd be guessing more than any thing.  I'm glad to hear it from someone on the inside.

One thing to note is that that driver in a MLC or SLC (or at least it used to matter a lot earlier this year (http://www.storagesearch.com/ssd-slc-mlc-notes.html)).  That SSD the OP linked is an MLC.  I hear the reliability of MLCs are going up, but the important part is "is going up".  If it was an SLC for that price, I might get it.  But as an MLC today, it's like buying a cutting edge video card when a new higher end card is coming out every 3 months.
