Title: CPS2 A Board blew my Monitor
Post by: SomeDJ on October 29, 2008, 01:03:35 am
So I was testing my 4 A boards to see if any were dead as I had never plugged them in before. I plugged in the second one and maybe 10 seconds after flicking on the power I hear the fan spin up really fast and I hear a snap and my monitor is gone. Has anybody ever heard of this before? I was running a Jrok board into a 19" Samsung TV. I checked my PSU and it seems fine. My Jrok board seems fine except for the LED which I'm sure blew. Not sure about the B board that was in the A board. I'll have to test that later. The fuse on the TV's chassis is fine but I can't read any voltage across it. Anybody seen or heard of a similar experience?

That would be extremely odd for your board to blow your monitor, I would think.

CPS2 motherboard fan spins very fast and loud normally.

would not affect the monitor, most likely is that you have a power supply fault
you need to set your multimeter to dc volts and read the jamma connector at pin 1(ground-black meter probe) to pin 3(+5-red meter probe)

I've checked my power supply and it's fine. Not sure how I'm gonna track this one down. Would it be possible for a fault in the A board's video circuit to send a surge to the RGB or maybe a fault in the boards power circuit sent a surge to my power supply and there was a momentary spike in voltage?

turn up the screen volts to see if you get a white screen

It's just a fuse.

The fuse is fine as I stated in my original post. I tested continuity across the fuse and it's fine

It's just a fuse.
:laugh2:

The fuse on the TV's chassis is fine but I can't read any voltage across it.

Across it ?

You don't measure voltage across the fuse, as in end to end of the fuse.
You measure it from one leg of the power cord to either end of the fuse.

Do you still have power coming in at the power cord of the TV/monitor?

That's what I meant by across it.

I found a loose cap on the chassis and resoldered it to the board. I looked for other cold solder joints and found nothing.

Still no monitor though but I do have power into the board and through the fuse.

What is the make/model of the monitor?

It's a 19" Samsung TV. Not sure of the model though as I threw the casing out monday and recycling pickup was yesterday.

there should be a make/model/serial number tag on the tuner shield - pending age of unit

Sounds like the tv has a "hot chassis" design.

No need anymore. I threw it out and found a free one off of craigslists list. Just putting it in now.

Must've been something else. This new monitor looks great. Even with a Jrok board and using composite. I tested all my A and B boards and they're all good except for one A board which has no sound.

I'm thinking the same thing now. It was all just bad timing. Everything's going good now. Cab's almost done.
