Title: Hiding Windows XP x64
Post by: FrizzleFried on October 27, 2008, 03:14:59 pm
I followed the Wiki on hiding Windows (I am not shelling),  however  for some reason with Windows XP x64,  even though I've followed the instruction to eliminate the "login" window,  the damn thing pops up for a 1/2 second then goes away.  Anyone know how to eliminate it completely?

Also,  can anyone recommend a decent "pointer" editor?

Finally,  has anyone figured out how to eliminate the taskbar completely (preferably in a fashion I can press a function key to enable when in windows if necessary).

Thanks!

Fronty...

Thanks!  The mouse pointer changer helps a lot... but  you're going to want to make the 4-pixel pointer WHITE not black,  as most cabs use a black background.

Unfortunately it didn't assist on removing the annoying LOGIN box from flashing up on screen before disappearing... and even though I put TASKBARHIDE in my start menu it still flashes on screen.

I also used  your proggy to remove the Windows Boot skin...made it just black as it's doubled up on screen and looks like ass anyway (using Soft15khz with a CGA monitor running through a JPAC).

ALMOST there...so close,  yet so far.

Oh well.

FrizzleFried have you tried Tom Speir's Instant Sheller (http://www.gameex.net/Community/InstantSheller/tabid/73/Default.aspx) app? It does most of the hiding for you.

No problem. Actually that was the idea, to make the pointer harder to see (with the focus on hiding windows). Doing a 4 white pixel cursor sounds fine also. You can always use HWH to quickly set your favorite cursor (not just the one enclosed with the zip file).

I noticed...it works great.  I use the white pixels because on my black background with the black pixels you can't see anything while in Windows.  I may actually try a single pixel to see if it's workable.

Sorry to hear HWH didn't quite get you there. Not sure what you mean with doubling up on screen though. The mod is a simple edit of the boot.ini file that tells windows not to show the boot screen.

This is the normal result of trying to run a 15lhz monitor with a 31khz sync.  It has nothing to do with your software... I just used your software to make the screen black which gives it a much cleaner appearance (black split in half just looks like a big black screen).

[qupte]From what you tell me Windows Xp 64bit's login window behaves just like Windows 2000's. The registry edit that hides the login works differently depending on the OS (it's a quirk). In win2000 decreases its appearance to a brief flash. In Windows XP (32bit) it hides the login completely. If you do figure it out let me know.

If I come up with a solution I will let you know.

I will take a look at it.  Last time I attempted to shell Windows XP 32-bit,  I couldn't quite get "there".

How does this work if I need to run Win apps at startup (soft15khz for example)?

You will have to use a program like RunAsSvc or XYNTService. You can download them from here (http://wiki.arcadecontrols.com/wiki/Utilities)
