Title: HELP: MAME cab Choking!
Post by: candycabguy on October 23, 2008, 07:48:50 pm
I notice, after I go in & out of 10-15 games with significant play over an hour, my system begins to 'choke' up and frames get jerky.  If I restart the system all is fine.  Also, if I stick with the same game for an hour it seems fine.  Whats the best fix?

My setup:

Lenovo Athlon Dual Core 2.3Ghz
2 Gigs RAM
Radeon vid card w/soft15khz 128 mb RAM
candy cab (Neo Geo)
MAME .126
Maximus Arcade

Thanks guys

Lee

Sounds like a RAM issue though you seem to have loads, could be a Video card issue or maybe an issue with background services or frontend system demands.

Most likely however I think your PC may be getting too hot. Video cards and ram get laggy if they get too hot (happens on some laptops where cooling is insufficient. It's likely the launching/exiting of games is demanding quick changes in disc access points too, generating heat as your hard drive spins faster. Try a full, alphanumeric sorted defragmentation using O+O defrag to see if that helps, and try running the PC outside the cab for a while too.

It's most likely a heat buildup issue.

If your cpu reaches a high enough tempreture, either the operating system
or the motherboard's bios will automatically reduce the cpu's clock speed
so that it will output less heat.

An MVS board doesn't produce as much heat as your pc does, so your
cabinet probably wasn't designed to circulate the amount of cool air
that is needed to keep your pc cool.

Try running a tempreture monitoring program to find out if this is the problem.

If it were heat, playing the "the same game for an hour it seems fine", would still have problems.

Sounds like something is eating up memory. Do a full virus and spyware scan.

What does the task manager say when the system is starting to run slow?
