This could probably go under my first post about things you would change, but I wanted to be sure everyone saw it.
I keep reading and thinking of games I want to play and I keep adding buttons. I'm afraid it's getting ridiculous!
Here is a breakdown:
Player 1
one joystick
7 buttons (for actual games)
1 button for player one start
1 button for player one credit
Player 2
one joystick
7 buttons (for actual games)
1 button for player 2 start
1 button for player 2 credit
Player 3
one joystick
6 buttons (for actual games)
1 button for player 3 start
1 button for player 3 credit
Player 4
one joystick
6 buttons (for actual games)
1 button for player 4 start
1 button for player 4 credit
1 Trackball
2 buttons on right side of track ball
2 buttons on left side of track ball
Additional
1joystick for older 4 way only games (pacman and qbert)
2 buttons
1 spinner
4 buttons for Mame Menu options (game start, exit, pause and options)
Finally
2 buttons one on either side of control case/box for pinball games
1 in front for pinball
Now I am sure I could add more buttons and I know it sounds funny, but is there anything else I'm missing? I don't want or need extra joysticks for games like tron and smash tv. I dont' want a yoke. Did I miss anything?

Did you want a wheel for driving games? Personally, I don't think you need 6 buttons for 3rd and 4th player.
-
No wheel and I agree about player 3 and 4 except that alot of people suggested I put it in for other emulation be it console or other

You might need them in other emus, but not mame.

Good point. That's something I hadn't thought of. I'm just gonna hook up 2 USB joypads anytime I wanna play 4-player games since my control panel won't be large enough.

I second that.
p3 and p4 looks weird if you dont have 6 buttons in there..just a thought..besides you might need em for console games later one(4p).
If I ever wanted to build 4 players panel then I WOULD add 6buttons for even p3 and P4. :)

If you're gonna deal with Console Emulators, you'll need 8 or 10 buttons per player..so six isn't really helping you much.....
If you wanna run a playstation emulator, for example, you'll need 8 buttons per player....and you can assign others for start/select

Nes, Snes, and pretty much everything else has six buttons or less (remember, select and start can be coin and start). When most people say console they don't usually mean Playstation, you shouldn't be emulating that anyway, it is still in the store.

He's right. I actually have a playstation but I would probably think about putting a dreamcast in with the pc but I think i would have enough buttons with 6
-
What you have sounds good to me. I would just go with that, cause if you change it and dont like it you're gonna end up rebuilding one that you do like.
Just my 2 cents. :)

Maybe this is not a can of worms I truly want to open, but GameBoy Advance is still in the store and it is being emulated like mad.
So why not Playstation 2?
Just wondering aloud .......

i'd have to geuss that is becuz the gb advance is still only 32-bits, whereas ps2 is 128. it would seem easier to emulate a system that is basically a snes (as far as graphics go) than to emulate a system as powerful as the ps2. i think it is a matter of the hackers skill and time more than a matter of the retailer's stock
-
I think it's too much.. but then again I:
a. don't play newer consoles
b. none of my favorite games are 4player
c. The ARCADE games that ARE 4 player... none of which have more than 4 buttons...
You can also cut down on buttons by using an ipac/key wiz's shift/shazzzaam function for administrative buttons... also using a coin door / small hidden/obscured microswitches can save panel space from having the coinup button(s)... *shrug* it's all personal preference.
And it's not like my do-it-all control panel came out perfect or is any sort of gold standard... I'm just riffin' here...

depends how you look at it...
i couldn't be bothered to hack a PS into my rig as well, so i just emulate (but i buy the games though)
:P

GBA is more powerful than a snes
-
yes it is, but it has few games that could not be placed on an snes cart and have a problem. the hardware is not meant to display 32-bit like ps, but more souped up 2d graphics.

Am I the only person who has no desire whatsoever to play console-based games in my cabinet? I have a PC with gamepads hooked up to my living room TV for that, which is how console games are meant to be played. Kind of like how arcade games are, y'know, meant to played on an arcade cabinet.

I hear ya sasquatch... I hear ya... I don't even own a console!
But I like to play atari, nes, and snes games on my cab as they work well with arcade controls... *Shrug*

I have very little desire to play console titles on my Mame cabinet either. Most console titles are ones where you might play for 2 hours at a go, who wants to stand up for two hours? If I start playing Zelda or MegaMan 2, then I am going to finish the entire game (usually without dying =), and I don't want to stand up all that time.
-
ok guys lets say im not going to play any console games how many buttons do i need?
-
i'd go 7 buttons for player 1/2 and 4 buttons for player 3/4... if i ever build a dedicated 4 player cab then i'd definitely go this direction :)
-
I'm designing a 4 player CP at the moment and am going for 7 buttons each for player 1 + 2, and 6 buttons for player 3 + 4, it might be a bit excessive for now but it does kinda future proof things a bit. I mean, who knows what will be emulated in the future that requires 4 player 6 button configs.
