Title: Super Mario Brothers In A Pacman Cab ***DONE***
Post by: MK3FAN on October 14, 2008, 06:57:09 pm
Off soon to pick up my new acquisition...Super Mario Brothers. Only thing is, it's in a Pacman cab. Don't know exactly what route I am going to take on whether to clean it up as a SMB, or restore it to Pacman. What do You guys think? (As if I didn't know)

Well, got it home. It all actually works quite well, but everything still needs to be refurbished. It's a factory Midway/Nintendo conversion cab (sorry I couldn't get a better picture of the ID tag). Here are some pics I snapped for a quick taste. Anyone have any good resources for new original Joysticks and buttons?

Ouch. Well, good place to start with taping and painting. What about the front and other side?

Worse! It's all a lost cause. To add to the severity, the hardened adhesive that was used to adhere the Formica is going to have to be sanded off. It's a shame to mutilate this cab further, but there is no other choice. It's beyond saving. More pics are n the way soon and you'll see what I mean.

Didn't think about the adhesive... That cab seems a good candidate for a "paint solid Ms Pac blue and wait for stencils/adhesive decals to be cheap" kind of deal. Or you could buy a cheap front panel sticky art and sandwhich it between two cabs.  :D

I plan to restore it to a Ms. Pacman in the long run. As it stands now, it would cost over $1000 to do so. As a result, for the time being, it shall TEMPORAILY remain SMB.

This is a "VS Unisystem" kit that was made special for Midway cabinets. Came with brand new prebuilt control panel, monitor mounts, drilling stencil, monitor plexi, marquee made for Midway cabs, new wiring harness (and power supply).

Strange that someone should put in a Nintendo monitor though. The few of these that we had all had normal video output and came with a wiring harness to plug directly into Wells-Gardner monitors!

It is odd that it has a 20EZ in it and not something like a K4600.
But if you notice it also appears to have all the factory components which makes it a standard monitor. (not the modified version for Nintendo)

That isn't a 20EZ.  It's a Sharp XM-2001N.  I always tell by the flyback Shield, but the pots on the PCB are a dead give away as well.

Anyone know why the monitor won't remember my settings? I change them all to get the picture just where I want it, then after I cycle power for a few hours, the picture reverts back to the way it was before I adjustred it. Any clues?

Have you adjusted it, turned it off for awhile and then turned it on and let it get good and warmed up to see if still changes?
Could be needing a cap kit.

Thanks. I got it from my local digital printing shop. Depending on how much you want and what kind, the price varies but it's usually about $2 a square foot.

"I plan to restore it to a Ms. Pacman in the long run. As it stands now, it would cost over $1000 to do so."

Sounds about right. My pac man was in about the same condition as your machine and that's about what it cost me. Seems to me like it would be a little cheaper and easier to convert it to a Galaga as the graphics would be cheaper and easier to apply vs either a stencil set or a full sized printed set of side art and I'm pretty sure you won't go to hell for that. Personally I would look for a Ms pac in better shape, as I will never spend that much money on a resto again. I really don't have that kinda cash...I ain't Joe the Plumber! (I had to earn my money for that one the hard way.. car crash! ...My wife bought clothes with her pain and suffering money so she couldn't say squat.. he he  :)) I'm with ya on the vinyl, its really hard to get a good finish with paint unless you have a compressor and a lot of talent and experience with painting. I got my vinyl for my last project from a fabric store (just gotta watch out for the gray hairs). They sell remnants really cheap, I covered my entire cab for $45.00 and $30.00 of that was the cost of the 3m spray adhesive (the high 90 I think ) came out really good and you don't have to spend a lot of time sanding and prepping... almost cheating really :)

Could be needing a cap kit.

That's what I though. Any good resources?

Bob Roberts carries a kit:
XM-2001N 19" color- Atari    $5.00

Zanen Electronics as well: Phone:  888-449-2636:
#302     For Nintendo Sharp XM-1801N or XM-2001N 19" color monitor.
             Includes 24 parts. $7.95 ea.

Nice job on the tube swap, looks really good.

That control panel plexi did look horrible, but it's kinda good that they had put that on there...... most don't and then you're stuck with the nasty cpo.

Yea... that would be the sane thing to do, plus its kida cool that it's a factory Nintendo conversion just for Midway cabs and not just some hack job conversion.

My Galaga coughmspaccough had a Vs Kit in it. After seeing your cab, I recognize why they went through the trouble of remounting the monitor and such. My monitor mounting angle and position was the exact same as yours, plus in stripping the CP, I found the same generic Nintendo overlay with the same button placement (plus 1 for standard Jamma), Nintendo conversion plate on the back, and I still have the ps that put out 100 V (unnecessary in my cab as it had a WG K7201 that needed 110) and converted the Midway power harness to use the 100V without hacking. Interesting kit.

What are the numbers on your Nintendo serial plate in the cab?

I got it on ebay. The guy was selling it for $20. It had a working chassis but he wouldn't sell just that, so I had to get the tube too.

Ok, got the control panel completed. The plexi had to be completely replaced. Here are some pics...

Also replaced the marquee bulb and the coin door lights...

All that's left is my sideart.  VS. SMB never even had a dedicated cab, let-a-lone sideart, so here is what it will be...

It's being printed right now. I'll probably get it in the next couple of days. The sideart is going to end up being 19" (w) x 27" (h)

I know, but since SMB did not have dedicated sideart, I thought this NES box art would look better that that generic one. Thanks.

They also did it during conversion to "hide" the holes from previous conversions. You can see an example of this in my 48-in-1 project.

Ummm... I hate to tell you this, but it's not even supposed to have a plexi overlay. Operators did that in an effort to protect the panels from cig burns.

That's fine. I like having the plexi on there so keep the overlay nice.

and I'd say it did a great job.

They also did it during conversion to "hide" the holes from previous conversions. You can see an example of this in my 48-in-1 project.
What holes? The conversion kit came with a control panel.

He means in general, not this particular example

Looks sharp ... shame you can't find a nicer marquee for it.
That's the only thing that stands out to me. The rest of the cabinet is sweet.

That turned out really well... and you even found a manual for your Vs kit (most impressive  :) ) Just think of all the fun you could still be having if you had converted that back to a Mrs. Pac.  Sweet and simple... I like it.
