The boss should have known better than having a guy named McIntosh working on NT servers.

Oh please...

Like they don't do backups in your part of the world?

Down the PDC and reload the tape from last week.  Heck we had guys try that game out where we worked.  I must have been deleted a few times since I last worked there.

Besides isn't a few millions Aus Dollars equate to a few thousand bucks via the exchange rate?  More than enough to buy the guy some time behind bars with a boyfriend named Trigger.

What a thing to do to a friend who let you sleep at her house.  How horrible.

Your press almost sounds as bad as my local rag, but with definitely better weather reports!   ;D

Anyone else notice the ad at the bottom of the article for learning real hacking skills?

this article elaborates a little more:

if you have to fly people in from interstate, i can see where some of the costs they claim are coming from. especially when things like 10000 public servants dont get paid that week, that gets messy...

Sounds like crap, the Northern Territory would be lucky to have 10,000 ppl living there.
The place is mostly an outback desert.

northern territory, AUSTRALIA. not north west territories, CANADA  ;)

from wiki, the NT's pop is 218,000. Darwin is the capital, i think more than half the pop lives there, which is where im from. and i know from two friends who worked at DCIS (the organisation that runs the governments computers) that they always have state of the art stuff. sometimes the first in australia. my theory was that if its new tech, and it stuffs up, better to test it out on a small population first  ;D  anyway, if its cutting edge equipment then the guys who come in to fix it (probably from canberra) are not going to be giving any discounts...

of course, the government are going to beat up the costs in the court hearing, but it still seems to me like it could run a lot of money to straighten out.

I know you meant Australia... I live in Sydney, and I can look out the window and see a bigger population than lives in the Territory.

Still, 10k public servants is a very high ratio of govt to non-govt workers.
Should be able to run the place with 1000 public servants, imo.

you might want to look at becoming a consultant. they would pay you well if they could save all that money on wages  ;)

edit: i think newscorp are doing what they do so well:

http://www.apsc.gov.au/stateoftheservice/0405/statistics/mainfeatures.htm#b

says there were 1720 public servants in the NT in 2005. i didnt think twice about their figure. it always seemed to me that every second person i met in darwin was a public servant. i guess i kind of am too now. im a postie in brisbane  ;D

The figures on that gov site seems more in line with what i'd expect.

I'd regard the Post Office as a govt-owned company, much like the water board or electricity mob.

Not really part of the public service.

Also, i'd hope they don't call the Tax Office a public service. They are more of a public nuisance. :D
