Title: So... who's 401k is taking a pounding?
Post by: HaRuMaN on October 10, 2008, 12:55:52 pm
My 401k has lost ~40% since the 1st of the year.  :badmood:

Now, this isn't going to really affect me that much, since I'm not going to retire for at least 35 to 40 years from now, and so I'm in it for the long haul.  It still sucks seeing all that money disappear.
*poof*

my financial smrt people told me to quit looking... I personally think they are asshats, but I'll test their theory out...

While its painful to see the account drop in value, look at it from the perspective that each time your buying into your investments now, it will be at lower prices.  You'll be buying more shares at lower prices and that's going to be better in the long term.

If your time horizon is really that long, this should be a minor blip on the radar.  Its painful but since your not counting on these dollars in the short term, it's much better.  Someone who is retired or nearing retirement is much worse off.

Ideally, you want to buy as many shares as possible and have the investment skyrocket right before you sell or retire etc.  Doesn't happen that way usually though....

I have been checking every day, just for curiosity. I know it doesn't matter, but I find it interesting.

While that's good going forward, it's not happy to watch the things you already paid for become near worthless.  If not for the 100% company match I'd have been down more than half of what I have put in.  Buying cheap today or not I bought what is in there now when prices weren't low.

Like mission said, the smrt people are just ignoring it.  I think I last looked about 5 months ago.  I have my hands on my ears and I'm singing at the top of my lungs.

I propose the guvment bail out my 401k instead of paying for AIG retreats...

Me too, I am scared to look, even though in the long term it will be OK.

I fear for my dad who just retired.

My 401(k) is down 38% from last October to yesterday. I took a worse hit after 9/11 but the account came back. Hopefully it will come back again.
