Hey fellow mamers...been at this hobby for about 10 or 15 years now. I have the chance to snag either a Mortal Kombat II Cab or a 2 player NBA Jam cab. Which one would you guys/gals think would make a better MAME cabinet? Both em them are nonfunctioning and need a bunch of work done. Cheers! Thanks to everyone past and present for all the hard work done here. Love it! Can't wait to get building my 2nd cabinet!

MK2 if you don't mess with the artwork and keep it as original as possible. It would be a shame to see one painted black.

Well, that depends on what you mean by non-functioning.
For example, if the monitor is OK in one and the game doesn't work, then it would be a snap to convert to mame.
But, if the monitor was bad and the game board still worked, well then that would be a problem for getting MAME going.
For aesthetic reasons, I would pick the MKII, since Raiden is just so bad ass.
but then again, NBA Jam comes with a wider control panel and is ripe to have a new top made for 4 player games.
To me, the NBA Jam artwork just looks like a commercial on the side. Raiden is a work of art, even if it is just a picture of an actor. But some people really go for the sports look.
hmm, don't know how much I'm helping, kinda rambling here. :blah:

MK2 Raiden is so cool when people walk into your game room and see him with the lightning bolts. It makes a statement.

Did they make 2 player NBA Jam Cabs? Are these dedicated original cabs, or conversions?

conversions. all factory jam cabs were 4 players

Thx for the replies everyone, I was leaning towards the mk cabinet as well, I'll have to take a better look at both of them and get all the details. Was just curious which one would better being changed to a mame cabinet. Can't wait to get started, I'll have 2 cabinets now, I might even do some different style controls with this one as I already have a 2 player standard cab. Cheers!

Well, Dedicated MKII and NBA JAM both had the exact same cab from Midway, the only difference was the NBA JAM had a wider 4-player CP. I am sure you all know what cab I'd vote for... ;)

Well I went and checked them out last night, neither of them are original cabs, and the wood is in pretty rough shape. Took a pass this time. Damn...there is a local arcade here that sells them, so I'm going to talk to their manager and see if they have and empty cabs or older cabs in decent shape. Wish me luck :)
