Hi
Ive recently obtained a Virtua Fighter cab and wondered if anyone could clear some questions I have regarding the monitor;
First of all the monitor model is a Nanao MS8-26SU 26". I beleive this is a dual res monitor (15/25 khz) - could anyone confirm this
Also would this be OK to run Mame on - ie would the monitor automatically switch between resolutions depending on the game? I am currently looking at running advmame using a rage 2 card.
Any suggestions would be greatly welcomed
Cheers

If I were you... I'd invest in an ARcadVGA card from ultimarc.com (http://www.ultimarc.com) but emailing andy first to verify that your monitor model does in fact do standard 15khz res. (if it's ONLY 25khz mid resolution you S.O.L)...
Hopefully the switching is automagic by the monitor (between 15 and 25khz...)
Mame will do the appropriate resolutions at 15khz to match those that the original game (when coupled with ArcadeVGA or with necessary tweaking, advanceMAME, and your old skool ati card) or nearly enough for our purposes =P
Rampy
PS I couldn't find a manual for your monitor online via google... which I thought woulda helped *Shrug*

Thanks rampy;
I emailed andy and he's not sure about the monitor being able to take 25 and/or 15 khz. All I need is some information on the monitor - tried searching for hours on the net with no luck. I talked to someone at sega today and they couldn't really help.
Thanks again :)

Virtua Fighter is a Med Res game (monitor must support 25khz). So you know at least that much. Most of the ones I've seen in VF cabs are only med res (and do not support 15khz)...but I could be wrong. I think you didn't give the proper model number of the monitor (its the number on the chasis and not the tube). Second, monitors that switch between 15 and 25 khz do not do so automagically. There should be a jumper plug on the board that you move over to another row of pins to swtich resolutions. If you don't see something like this, then its probably not switchable.
Best solution for Mame would be the ArcadeVGA card. You could also try PowerStrip software to see if you existing card will sync down to 25khz.

Thanks for your reply Dave;
I've checked the model number on the chassis and it is correct (was suprised when I couldnt find hardly anything on the net about it - heres a links that is selling one http://www.bigtop.com.au/products/parts/monitors/62.html
says thats its a dual 8 series) , the number on the tube is a mitsubishi part number.
The only other info i have read is about a virtua golf cabinet which contains a dual res monitor where it explains, like you say, changing jumpers for the res change.
As andy from ultimarc states on his site "dont use a 25khz monitor if possible" I'm trying to find about the dual res option on my monitor before i look at pursuing a new route. not sure where else I can look.
Thanks guys
Mart ;)

I was pointed to the segaservice site on another forum and found that virtual fighter and outrunners possesed the same monitor model and part #, but are set to different resolutions;
Game Name: Virtua Fighter
Cabinet Type: U/R
Monitor Size: 26"
Model Number: MS8-26SU
Sega Part Number: 2001-5187-15
Monitor Maker: Nanao
Flyback Number: 999-0207
Country made: USA
Voltage: 120v
Resolution: Med(24Kx60)
Model Number: MS8-26SU
Chassis Number: 999-0206
Manual Part Number: 999-0317
Game Name: OutRunners
Cabinet Type: Twin
Monitor Size: 26"
Model Number: MS8-26SU
Sega Part Number: 2001-5187-15
Monitor Maker: Nanao
Flyback Number: 999-0207
Country made: USA
Voltage: 120v
Resolution: Std(15,750x60)
Model Number: MS8-26SU
Chassis Number: 999-0206
Manual Part Number: 999-0317
This makes me think that the monitors res can infact be modified.

Post this question on RGVAC and you will get more knowledgable answers I suspect. Generally, when dealing with real arcade stuff (other than controls) the collectors etc on RGVAC will know 80x more than the people here who aren't just regulars at both :) Someone should probably be able to scan/sell you a manual or schematic.

Some people have gotten their existing graphics card to output 25khz using PowerStrip for windows. There is a free trial verison you can download. If your card will sync down, then no need to buy the ArcadeVGA card, and it will look better at 25khz than 15khz anyway!

Off subject but what exactly is RGVAC?

Thanks for your reply boys; Dave_K
When you say it will look better on 25khz, does this aply to native games that run at 15khz - does this piece of softeare take into account actual games reslutions. HOw would a 15khz games be displayed on a monitor running at 25khz for example? Would this involve some software stretching/interlacing to achieve an authentic result?

Well if you want "authentic" then you need to run the monitor in real 15khz mode (which I doubt you can). So using powerstrip to run Windows in 640x480 at 25khz is going to be best you can do. Whatever options you tell mame to emulate for video is then up to you (suit your tastes). I doubt you will have to specify interlace options as even at 25khz, you should be able to see the scanlines.
