Title: How many buttons do you need?

I've seen a lot of 4 player configurations cabinets here and I wanted to know do need 4 or more buttons for each player. Obviously player 1 and 2 do but what about 3 and 4?

I guess you could say the standard is P1&2 with 7-8 and P3&4 with 4. However some people say that P3&4 should get more for future emulation or for consoles. But I do not know many 4 player console games.
