Title: Battlezone Opinion
Post by: FrizzleFried on September 17, 2008, 03:56:13 pm
I've located a Battlezone locally.  Overall good condition.  Side art 7.5-8/10,  game plays,  monitor works but starts to pulse after warming up.  The guy wanted $350.  I got him down to $325.  I'd told myself if I could get him down to $300 i'd buy it,  but he's not budging from $325.  Yes,  $25.00 is chump-change and probably shouldn't ruin a good deal,  that said,  is this a good deal?  $325.00 puts it at an "OK" deal IMHO and worthy of asking you opinions...

Does it have the open monitor display or the periscope style bezel?

In my case, I wouldn't take one for free. The game is unique and fun for a little bit but it's just not worth dedicating the space to. Pong is another game like that. Has great historical value and all, but it's just not a great game to play.

Periscope style I do believe... is there that much of a difference?

The periscope is much more fun.

I agree 100%.  For me at least there is very little replay value to the game.  It just gets hard to the point where I have no chance.  It was fun back in the day (periscope version!) but unless it is a fav I would not pick one up.

I just like the look of the periscope version better, it looks cooler to me. :)

Never saw one without a sight. I like the game. Didn't as a kid, partly because I was too short to see through it! Given what I've seen on these this sounds like a decent deal.

something to note: frizzle has STACKS  of room at his place. this would be a pretty cool addition to his collection. doesnt matter if its not played every day. be nice to think it would be bought by someone who will look after it, rather than someone who might mame it or something...

Frizzle I'd say if you have the room snag it.  I've seen the bezel shroud go for $130 and a populated cp with working sticks go for between $80-$100.  That's $210-$230 right there just for the shroud and cp and you're talking a complete machine.  Hopefully the monitor will be an easy fix, but if not they aren't that much either are they?

If nothing else it's a cool design with a unique look to add to your collection.

Why would the value of parts matter to someone with no intention of parting a game out?   ???

Cos once he gets it and realizes how boring it is he'll want to recoup his investment.   :P

Honestly, and I say this as a vector whore, I would only get a Battlezone if it were really cheap.  I can't bring myself to part out a vector game and Battlezone just isn't much fun.  Great to play at someone else's house but not to pay that much cash for and keep around when you could have a better game there.

Sorry that wasn't what I was getting at... just pointing out that this is a complete machine and if someone were trying to build one using original parts it would cost them much more.  I wasn't saying to part it out.

Thanks for the opinions guys.  I was actually swayed.  I think I am going to use the dough I have that I was going to spend on it for a Core2Duo/motherboard/memory... the horizontal cab gets an upgrade,  then the AMD64 3200+ that is in the horizontal cab now becomes the PC for the driver MAME I want to do next.

Hmmmm....

For shame ... a working and complete BZ at that price is something that would result in me moving a machine out to make room.

You're gonna need a couple hundred for the Logitech G25 that you know you've gotta put in the driver cab.
