Title: Curbside find
Post by: KillerV on September 15, 2008, 08:19:42 pm
There I was, eating dinner at my Parent's house when my good buddy calls me up and says that there's an arcade game sitting in front of a house that he just drove by. He didn't know what it was, or the condition. So I get my Brother-in-law and we start driving there (8 min away). half way there he calls again and said that he went back to look at it and right after he got out of his car another guy stopped to look. So I told him to stay put. When we got there it looked like a party with all the people looking at it, but I had first dibs. I took it.

The guy throwing it out said that it had sound but no video. So I checked it out once in my garage. Took the back off and there was a large Altered Beast PCB and a smaller board sitting on the bottom, not plugged into anything. I knew what the PCB was, but not the little board. So I plug it in, and everything works but video. So I do some testing, power supply ok, switches, plugs, contacts..etc...

Well, I noticed that the little pcb had 2 connectors on it that matched 2 other connectors on the monitor board. So I try it, and they fit perfectly. Power it up, and bam! I got me a working Gun Smoke game.

The board with the black knob is the one that was in the bottom of the cab that I had to re-attatch.

So is this a good find? I never really played this game before. Should I restore it, MAME it? How hard is it to hook up the Altered Beast board?

Thats a Stern cab... Maybe originally a Scramble, since its vertical.
Definitely a nice find.

Definitely a Stern cab.  Without removing the top layer of paint to see the sideart can't tell which one.

The monitor is a K4600.  The board you replaced was one of the monitor's daughercards.  Without it, it won't work (as you found out).

I have a cab that looks just like that, but with the Express Raider game in it.  I'm looking to MAME it, since it's missing the monitor and needs work cosmetically.

Altered Beast uses Sega pinout and will require an adapter to work in that cab.

Yeah, I found a tag inside that says Super Cobra. That was a great game. I'm not sure what to do with it. GunSmoke is pretty hard. I'l probably MAME this one and flip my home built cab's monitor to horizontal.

Actually the monitor was on in those pics. I did'nt think about turning the flash off for that. But the image is nice. No burn-in at all.
