I have been kicking around a copule of ideas for my first mame machines and I have settled on 2 designs that I intend to work on pretty much simultaneously
Project A.D.A.M.(Another Damn Arcade Machine)
-short (4 foot tall tops) cabinet
-- lcd based for a thinner depth
---no trackball, layout will be standard streetfighter+1
----wireless keyboard/mouse combo for maintinence
I'm not going to lie I wasn't really satisfied with a design until I stumbed into mako's thread this morning. I was inspired! My fiance' is already groaning at the idea of this...heh i love it. I know the idea of going nuetered (no trackball) could be considered blasphemy, but i am more of a fighting game fan really. I may add a trackball once i get more comfortable with my construction abilities...the cp will probably be one of the later pieces to this build.

Project E.V.E. (Entertaining Various Environments)
-Control panel based
--pc built into control panel
---plug-n-play for tvs
This will be my focus for the near future. I am wanting to build a plug-n-play box that i can take around to parties and family gatherings. My goal is go have what appears to be a thick control panel with a power plug and av out ports
These are finally moving past the daydream stage and im ready to annouce them. My goal is go get at least E.V.E. done by christmas. A.D.A.M. should be done shortly thereafter. Though i am getting married in november...wish me luck on that goal/deadline.

as soon as i get power back im gonna start making some prelim cutouts for E.V.E. (still have no power after the windstorm...im online at work)
My overall goal with "her" is to not be overly massive. I want to be able to carry this more or less under my arm when im transporting from the car. I'm probably going with a microatx based computer since im not going to be looking at much more than cps2 emulation. Ideally ill just be using an optical drive to install the os and then not including it in the final build.
At this point I'm still kicking around artwork themes, I'm going to go with the obvious masculine/feminine looks for the respective projects, but past that im stuck for ideas.

Resurrecting my project post...be scared
Life kind of got in the way for a while (a wedding followed by buying a new home will do that), but I have finally put some serious effort into this. I've finally gotten a control panel mock up i'm satisfied with for A.D.A.M. and I will be finally putting blade to wood in the next couple weeks as the temp warms up. My new home has given me a game room/workshop so I have a place to finally get some of this done, so I'm anticipating updates to follow a more timely fashion.
E.V.E. will follow shortly.
I honestly never knew how much work went into these things until i sat down and got serious. But it'll be worth it in the end.
