Title: Is there a button to add a screenshot automatically to Mala?
Post by: Axe on September 07, 2008, 12:25:51 pm
Hey guys, been away from Mame for a while and getting back into it.. I used to use winmame(ithink) and it had a simple button to add a screenshot associated with a rom.  So when i was playing 1943 i could hit print screen and it would save a snapshot.

I have been digging through the wiki and such all morning, is there a way to do this with Mala???  I would love to have screenshots with my listing instead of "no image available"

:D

Mame is the program that creates the screenshot.  Mala has nothing to do with it.  You need to make sure that the snap directory in the mame.ini file points to the same folder that you have specified in Mala.  Then while playing Mame, press whatever key creates the snapshot.  There are already screen shot archives available for download that cover 99% of the working roms.

Thanks SGT,  it turns out the button was f12 in mame, and i had already made a tonne of screenshots!

But Mala still doesn't display them! :(  I made sure the snaps folder was setup to the proper place, but no go still...

May be a vista issue...  I am getting the bugs worked out for my Mame projects, but I am testing with my Vista desktop (which more than a few front ends don't even want to think about working with)

The final install will be on systems powered by Tinyxp, stripped way down...  I have one of the systems up and running (but not in a cab yet) so i guess phase 2 is testing front ends on that, so it will perform similar to my final system

Just checking..

Are you using a layout with a 'snapshot' window? The default MaLa layout does not have one.  ;)

I've tried a few layouts that support screenshots, and n one seem to be ok, Currently i blame vista issues...  I've been digging through documentation and the wiki for the past 48 hours, but nothing seems happy... I'll try the same thing on my xp machine....

Original screenshots have the same name as the rom-set but if you press F12 Mame generates a different name.

Example:

Original screenshot : ANTEATER.PNG

Screenshot with F12 : ante0000.png

Maybe that's the problem  ???

Sorry to bump such an old thread but this is something
that I never got resolved either...
I would like to do my own snapshots in Mala/MAME v127 but
it seems I run into this same issue as Luigi.

Any workaround for this?

It didn't generate a different name. It gave it a name that didn't already exist, starting with a four digit number, in this case, naught. That's one of the problems with using snaps as eye candy, which is one reason I don't. Of course, you can have your snaps in a folder named 'snaps', rather than snap, and set that for your snap eye candy directory, whilst keeping your SNAP directory free for taking them.
