i live in a set of units. out hot water trips the circuit breaker every now and then. no biggie, i just check it every now and then when i come home. the other day, i found someone had locked the circuit breaker box. dunno why, it has never been locked in the nearly 3 years ive lived there. i asked my housemate, and the woman who lives next to us. they both own their units, and neither knew anything about keys. today i asked the neighbour across the hall. he owns his unit too. he didnt even realise there was a circuit breaker box outside! so, after work today out came the tools. off came that MFing door (freakin heavy too, could have skipped a gym session) and out came the drill and i 'fixed' that lock up good and proper ;D ah, warm shower...
oh, and as usual our asstastic innernetz is dead again. i might look into that there 3g wireless stuff, although the first place i looked said it wasnt mac compatible! WTF? if its not mac compatible, its even less likely to be linux compatible...

Go back to dial up.
If anything its nostalgic. :D
-
funny you should say that. if i lived on my own, i would! when our turdesque adsl actually works, its slower than a 56k dial up...
-
Wouldn't it help if you got something fixed so the circuit breaker wouldn't trip?

nah! its one of those things where you call the electrician, he comes and has a look, doesnt find anything and then goes again. its been doing it for all the time ive lived there. if i owned the place, i would probably try harder to get it fixed. but my houesmate is flat broke all the time, so i look at it as helping her out financially by flicking the circuit breaker back on once or twice a week (",)
the internet however, im really losing patience with. i think we should just close the account. it means more internet cafes for me, and missing on most ebay auctions, but i think i could learn to live with less internet. means more N64 and TV ;D
-
It's probably someone who kept seeing you flip the circuit breaker and thinking that you were messing with "their" box.
I had a similar issue back when I lived in my cottage. My washing machine would trip the breakers One day, some retarded ass electrician from complex management was fitting all of the boxes with locks. I asked him what he was doing and he just shrugged his shoulders, mentioned something about "a new policy" and slunk off. I gave the locks a total of about three days, then I went around one night and cut the locks off on every circuit box in the complex. Second time it happened, I made a mistake and cut the tabs off... OOPS! No locks since.

LOL, or how about when your modem got disconnected because someone in the house picked up the phone right before you download the real juicy strip.

I might be having something in common with your situation soon, Danny, I'm smack-dab center in the path of Hurricane Ike.

in which case i would feel much better off, since you might not have a house to have hot water or internet in!
oh, and since it has passed, how did you go? escape unharmed?

It might be a while before we hear from Cakemeister... something like 90% of Houston and its suburbs are still without power.
-
well lets hopes he came out of it unscathed
-
I'm okay. I had some fence damage and a lot of debris in my yard, but nothing major. I have to admit that watching the wind blow was a bit scary.
The power has been out since Friday at 10:37 pm. 4 1/2 days so far, so I lost the contents of my refrigerators and freezers. Thankfully the weather turned cool (80 high/60 low, pretty chilly for a Houston September) so we have been fairly comfortable at night.
My daughter didn't like the impact on her lifestyle of not having electricity so she drove to San Antonio yesterday with her brother. School will be out until at least Wednesday, and she heard a rumor that it would be next Monday until school resumes.
I'm posting this from work, where the power just came back on. :applaud: Don't tell my boss.

YAY! and you still have a roof. good things, roofs...

I thought you didn't live that close to Houston?
-
The Houston metropolitan area is very large.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Greater_Houston
So even though I live out by what used to be Compaq, that's still 20 miles from town.
At 10:37, I've been without power now for 6 1/2 days.
-
Congrats on surviving the storm Cakemeister!

Heh, thanks for the wiki. I live there too. :-)
I got power back Monday Sept 15 at noon in the Galleria area. I have family in Tomball right across the Silverado theater further out from the HP campus and they got power back on Sept 16. Additional family in Kingwood are still out of power. Family elsewhere in the city are half and half.

7 1/2 days and counting. :hissy:
One of the guys at work might hook me up with a generator. :applaud:
Unfortunately the weather has turned hot again.
