Title: First Build. Hyperspin, LEDWIZ, Mameroom all in 3D
Post by: H4CK3R on September 04, 2008, 03:56:39 pm
Well this is my first build.. I have only been into this project alittle over a month.  So there are still a few bugs to work out.

I have to give credit where it is due.  Brian and Bill over at Hyperspin-fe where able to come into Vegas( where I live ) and give me a crash course in everything. These guys are very skilled and energetic about everything GAMING.  Without there help and support, I would still be at a lost on what to do... SO thank you guys =)

Also a shot at Scott at Mameroom.com.  There where a few techincal issues, and he even answeared his phone in the middle of the night to help us with these.  This guy is SOLID when it comes to support.  I would shop with him anytime I needed a new cab built.  In fact I am, my boss came to my home and wants one for himself...  So...  Back to work.  LOL

Here is the Video.

Leave some feedback and tell me what you think I can improve on.  Right now I would like to get more involved with working with the LEDBlinky so that I can set up a way to tell the program where each LED is on a grid, and then overlap a pattern based on the placement of the buttons, ect to make a design flow.

Also got my 3D glasses and software to make everything "POP" out at www.ddd.com

Very nice! :applaud:

For some reason, this thread finally inspired me to give Hyperspin a try (eventually).

Anyone know what kind of U360 support it currently has?

As far as U360 support, what are you looking for?

Actually, I guess my question is (and I haven't read up on your FE much, I apologize) do you have the ability to launch pre-emulator / post-emulator command lines? I mean, I'm using MAME .127 now, so I have the ability to use its auto-mapping feature, but I've been used to loading maps in Ultramap through Mamewah.

Nice setup Hacker...

I just setup my HTPC to run HyperSpin on a 42" Plasma.... looks great..  Of course, I just have the FE running to show off, as no games are currently installed to play on... LOL

Can't wait until it gets some of the bugs worked out and more features installed (IE: Select wheel moves out of the way after an emulator or game is selected....Blocks the eye candy in my opinion).

Good sh*t mate...  Enjoy that beast

Have you considered putting any lights on the control panel?  It seems kind of dull.

You gotta love the boys over at Hyperspin, they really are doing some amazing stuff, so much that I contributed a theme! ;D

It really is an amazing FE and it is making some really good progress!

GV - I don't think Hyperspin has any pre/post external app capability - something it definitely needs. Start/Quit/Screensaver commands would also be really nice.

Not quite sure. I will check in to it. It might be in the works as a lot of things are right now.

they do have a screen saver / attract mode, and they are making changes as we speak to help incorprate LEDWIZ/Blinky into the mix.  I finnally was able to figure out how to load the Blinky Generator.. boy was that time consuming, and after I was done, I realized i made a few mistakes at the beginning.. LOL

Back to the drawing board!

Also talked with Scott from mameroom, they are going to be looking into a more user friendly UI.

That system I ahve running the cab is just a duel core 3.4 gtz with 6 terabyte HD raided.

Other PC with the 6 Monitors is a BEAST... Duel core OC at 4.2 now... Didn't like the 5.0 OC and kinda told me to bend over  LOL...  With 3 9800 GT's and 6 22's monitors.  8 gig's ddr3 ram on the 680i board.  G15, ect, ect

I've not used it, so I don't know. I know that it can map an analog stick to 2-way, 4-way, 8-way, etc according to the game being played, but I've not tried it out.

Hey H4CK3R,
It looks like This HTPC (http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/lifeware-media-center,news-29109.html) is right down your alley.

H4: how about some games run on that monster monitor?  Especially mame.  (By the way, you have a control panel that you got from Mameroom. Your 'cabinet' doesn't look finished yet.)

Everything runs great.  I even run Crysis and Bioshock in 3D.  Looks amazing.  Yeah, it's not a COMPLETE Cab... But I have to decide if I want to be able to tear it down fast to take to events, so that i can share it with others.  I am currently making a stand for the CP.  That will hold the computer, and a Fixed HD projector, so that I can just plug the stand with the control panel on it, and project a 20 foot screen.

I Don't make a lot... but I am married and we both work... After our bills are paid, Morgage, Elect, ect ect  I can spend my money on toys for the house.  Normally Wife and I take 3 vacations a year, Fiji, NY, Hawaii, we decided to to put some of that money aside for toys.

Helps that we don't have any kids too =p

I just checked that out.  I use to install home systems, only problem is I didn't get a chance to run wires in this house before the walls went up.  Once we do decide to upgrade to a new home, I am going to be starting from scratch...

At least run surround sound WIRES to every room,  Cable in every room including bathrooms, and 5 Cat5 for every room minus bathrooms( 2 for internet, one for phone, and 2 for control box)...

I love gadgets =)  I find that they make great hobbies, and in cases like this, they improve the value of your home at the same time, making the wife happy...

I've been out of the scene for a long while.  What emulators are you running for your platforms?
Title: Re: First Build. Hyperspin, LEDWIZ, Mameroom all in 3D

All of them.  Some emulators play some games better then others.  You can configure each game to start what emulator you want to run in.

H4CK3R,

Real nice job!   I actually just ordered a 4 player panel kit from mameroom too intending to do the same thing (a stand for the panel and a large TV instead of a cabinet).  I was originally intending to order a two player panel, but my wife convinced me at the last minute to go four players since this will be the last machine.  I ain't looking forward to wiring the bad boy, but it should keep me busy for a while.

Are you using electric ice buttons with the LED-Wiz?  I don't want to light every button, but I'm curious as to what the easiest way is to set up lighting for all of the player buttons or if it's just more trouble than it's worth...

If you just want to light a few buttons you might like to take a look at the PacDrive or U-HID from Ultimarc as well.

I was originally thinking about the pac-drive (I'll have to look into the U-HID) because it seemed a little easier to set up, but I could be wrong.  Thanks for the suggestion!

That build is pure sickness.  :notworthy: I was thinking of the doing the same thing a whiiile back but decided to go with the old school upright cabinet with mameroom/scott.  But you pulled it off nicely.

How do the joysticks work for you, no problems with wires coming off right? Did you order them from Scott as well? The RGB joys can be a lil troublesome with how they are set up but I haven't had any problems with anyone twisting them like to the point where the wires comes off.

I got mine back in April and only until now wired all the buttons and joysticks to the ledwiz ( 5 in total to light up a 4 player cabinet >_<)  so I know how hard it must've been.  But the front end your using is awesome, your build alone inspires me to do the same lol. What did you use for a stand of the control panel, custom made?

Now all you need is the 360 modded support and have a nice set up for castle crashers lol.

H4CK3R,

Depends on how you want your setup also, do you plan to wire single color leds to the buttons or using the RGB leds? The single colors your only running two wires for each led while the RGB are 4. Now it may not seem like a whole lot more but when your wiring a 4 player cabinet, wiring every single button, with RGB joysticks also, you can be wiring at least 152 wires on the RGB leds alone. Not taking into consideration the amount of time to set up and map each buttons R G & B wire to the correct led# port on the software you use (which isn't that hard but a time consuming job).

Honestly though if you don't mind the extra effort and work the RGB leds are a awesome choice, and give you almost a unlimited amount in color choices once fully setup. You'll definitely feel good about yourself once its done also. But be ready to cough up quite a bit to fund the project. With the control board itself arounf $150-$175, you have like 42 buttons (9 [start+coin] each player, 3 for trackball, and 6 for admin buttons, plus the led boards with the wires soldered on already ( which I suggest having done for easier time starting), 4 or 5 RGB led joystick, a translucent track ball + special RGB led board (drilled on existing trackball unit to save $) and then the 5 led-wiz boards your gonna need to light up a 4 player panel with the RGB leds. (Phew that was alot) Your easily looking at $400+ for the led project supplies alone, and around $675 altogether for the board and all.

Plus your gonna want to order an extra 5-6 in RGB led boards just to be safe as while I did my board I accidently broke 3 in the process with either the wires coming off ( they are really thin and come off with too much force) due to misshandling or the leds got bent while installing in the buttons.

The single leds will be cheaper project wise, but if you don't mind the reeeaallly long time setting it up and getting down to a really detailed job its worth it getting the RGB. You don't need to be a rocket scientist to do it but patience is definitely a must.

Phew... that was long but hope it made up your mind.

Scott from mameroom.com built my cab... Ran short on funds to have the stand built, so bought a metal rack from home depot for 50 bucks...

It works good for now.. but looking into making a Carbon fiber stand for the arcade with a stainless steal outer decorative shell, with cutouts for images that will be light up with LEDs for some color.

Also looking into having www.big3d.com making me a layout for the top that is of course in 3D.

What really surprized me is that the 50 inch Plasma is exactly the same Width as the Cab... so once I am ready to put it all togther, it should match up perfectly.

Going to be moving everything downstairs next to the pool table once all the Modding and programing is completed.  I am guessing a few years.. haha.

I love a hobby that is constantly growing and evolving. I have been a fellow reader here, and it is too all of you before me that i owe this too.  Without lying down some wisdom on these boards, and helpfull advise not only to me, but others that i gained insight of what my goal was.  You all have inspired me. And I thank you.

Here's to many more years of growth.  I will be here for awhile...

Puerrican... dude...

Thanks for breaking that down for me.     While I agree with you that I would probably feel good about myself once everything is all done, I'm not sure I've got it in me to go through that exercise.  If I was going to use lit buttons, I would definitely go the RGB route.  But as it is, I'm not a pro at wiring.

I also took a look at how much all of the buttons and boards would be and at this point, it's just more money than I'm willing to spend.  Actually, money is the main reason I went with a kit -- I didn't want to drop $500 - $700 dollars all at once on a complete control panel.  I figured the way I'm doing it now would allow me to throw a little money at a time at the project.

Thanks for putting it all in perspective for me.  I think I'll go with non-lit buttons and put that money towards something else like a nice display!   ;D

@Dizzle
I hear ya, thats what I did at first, I started with non-lit buttons and then about 9 months later when I had extra cash to spend I bought the supplies for the led buttons. Its really expensive on the mod alone, but worth it in the long run. But theres no rush to go for it yet. Only trouble to it is when you do it your gonna wanna do it really somewhat professional like because you sure as hell don't wanna open the panel over and over again.

Plus (not a diss to mameroom or anything) the control panels from mameroom are meant to be somewhat finished at first and then close. Sure you can open it again as many times as you need, but open it and move the unit around extensively and the wood itself and the connectors may start to lose its sturdy build.

@H4CK3R

Sounds awesome, can't wait to see how it comes out in the end. Was hopeing on tryout out Hyperspin since it seems to work almost fluidly and looks a hell of a lot better then most frontends but seems to be in closed betas >_<...
Keep the board posted on extra work you do on the cabinet or new projects

EDIT:: Correction it seems they do have official public releases, niiice, definitely trying it out on my big hd in my room to see how it turns out tonight.

Just added 2 new lightguns topgun..  not too bad playing House of the Dead 3 in 3D.   Hyperspin has added God amounts of new themes to its library.  The whole Dalfin sets are done, about 200 + mame, errr... NVM youll just have to see for your self.. its really is a great collectio so far.

I droped the DDD Drivers... DON'T BUY FROM THESE TARDS.... No software support, no emails, no phone calls, nadda... Plain JUNK...  If ya want to go 3D get the drivers from IZ3D these guys know what they are doing... Once i hooked that up, I had direct control over everything withen the games,a nd I didnt have to spend an extra 6 bucks a game for them to support it...  Works on everything.

Now I am just looking for the best games that play in 3D... so far, even tho I don't personally play it, is WoW.  Kids love it in 3D.  Bioshock comes in pretty good too.

Let me know if any of you have a better 3D solution with the Samsung 50 inch... I am all ears =)
