Title: Ignoring
Post by: Hemi on September 03, 2008, 07:20:30 pm
I'd like a way for the board members/me to actually see who has them on ignore. That way we/I do not waste time quoting others posts when they won't see it anyway during a thread discussion.

In other words, I need a list of who has me ignored as to not waste any time on them and I might as well ignore them too.

EDIT: Kinda ironic that Hemi won't see this because he is ignoring me ...  ;D

Who has two thumbs and is #5 on the list?

THIS GUY!!!!  And damn proud of it!

Actually, if Hemi hasn't set up his preferences right, he can see you. I have him on my ignore list, but still see his posts because of the same thing. I want to see what crap he's spewing, but like the idea of putting a negative mark against him.

I'm just going to ignore that comment, GV, but not ignore you altogether. See how easy that was, I didn't even have to press any buttons or anything, all I had to do was forget I ever read your post.  ;)

I am #6.  The bandwagon is in full swing.

Quoting somebody's comment and replying to it is actually the exact opposite of ignoring it.  I'm just sayin' . . .

Knowing who is ignoring you would just lead to problems and bad blood. Anonymity is much better. If they are no longer responding to you, then there is no problem. The only reason you would need to know is if you are trolling.

Yeah, but I'd like to know who the people ignoring me are, just so I know:

A) who not to bother responding to

and

B) who to mend relations with

Not everybody ignoring someone is mad at them -- I'm not angry with any of the folks that I have ignored.

Some have had avatars that drive me nuts, some babble and I don't want to see all of it (but will choose to see specific response in specific threads) and some I ignored during the original ignore thread discussion.

I like it the way it is, but if a change were to be made, I would definitely prefer to abandon the ignore feature over letting everybody know who is ignoring them -- there is no upside to that.

Actually, if we could kill the public stats for Ignorance (!), that would be even better.

Yeah, but I'd like to know who the people ignoring me are, just so I know:

A) Everyone else will still see your post, so what does it matter?

B) If a person keeps you on ignore for any length of time, they aren't worth mending relations with. I have a long term ignorer. I have no clue who they are at this point, nor do I care. All I know for sure is that it is not one of the people I suspected. Hell, it might even be someone who is only a lurker.

Bottom line is this, if you even have to check your profile to keep tabs on who is ignoring you, then it may be a time to take a step back.

Could be someone who hasn't logged in in a while, too.  I have two people no ignore and I have no anger towards either of them - they just both tend to be very weird and long winded and I can't ever figure out wtf they're talking about.

People don't even need to be weird or long-winded to be ignored.

There are folks who have something to say about everything and post in nearly every thread.

For some of those people, I have a significant interest in what they have to say on particular topics, but reading their every thought in every thread would consume a ton of time.

The fact that I have them set to ignore as a default (and then view their individual posts in topics that interest me or where I value their opinion) probably says more about me than it does about them.

I guess it doesn't matter. Everyone worth talking to seems to see my replies, and I've never had a PM go unnoticed, so I'm not sure who it is and don't care.

I dont have anyone ignored, and I dont think anyone ignores me (except the wife and kids), but cant you just not open up any posts from the ones you wish to ignore?

You have one user ignoring you.  :D

It's not a matter of opening posts from people you don't want to hear from, it's a matter of not seeing them troll in a thread like I Heart My Honda.

I guess I can switch back to the standard forum template now. I really don't care for SMF.

So what did he do to get banned? I thought that after I ignored him and the Hemi thread got locked, he was doing better.

He threatened Ginsu.  Plus, he was an idiot.

He never tried to do any better.  Final straw was when he claimed to have Ginsu's personal info and threatened to pay him a visit IRL.

Laughable, really...

It's sad that saint has to put up with idiots like that. It must be stressful to deal with individuals like that. I'm amazed he's so patient. I'd have kicked the kid off from the first indication that he had no interest in settling in.

Same here. Back when I was a moderator at Davesclassics.com, I didn't have ban power and begged for it. Finally they let people like Hemi overrun the boards while I was only able to delete posts, not ban.

I snapped and posted a huge diatribe and got banned instead :)

(This was about 10 years ago, before he sold out and became classicgaming.com...)

You left out the 10 years ago part, though. Young and ignorant.

Though being a moderator and having to watch a forum be flooded daily gets to you. We had a great emulation forum run into the ground.
