Weird !!! Looks completely original, but that marquee......where's the S ? And where's the Atari logo ?
Nuts.
Even more nuts:
This was sold for €50,- together with some generic Jamma cab.........and I missed it. :banghead: :banghead: :banghead: :banghead: :banghead: :banghead: :banghead: :banghead: :banghead:
I know, it's converted, but still, I had definitely wanted this....

Ooh.. man. I feel your pain. Seems like I'd heard of "Asteroid" before..
the gameplay wasn't that great.

(ducks)

I thought it was funny.

:laugh2: :laugh2: :laugh2:
-
Odds are that doesn't have a vector monitor in it anyway... look at the CP. That ain't Asteroids. That's a JAMMA CP.

That is bizarre. Maybe there was a trademark conflict in certain regions? If its counterfeit, it seems like a lot of trouble to go through, copying all the exact same artwork, but then leave off an S.
-

Yeah, but it WAS the only game I could ever get the high score on...
It's gotta be a bootleg, right (?), since Asteroids was ripped off a lot. Not listed on Andy's Arcade, though, which is the most complete list of vectors I know of...

I agree with RayB that it seems like a lot of trouble to leave off the "s." It's not like that would have protected you from the Atari lawyers...
-
Heheh, you're right about Andy's list. As a matter of fact, Andy (Andreas) was here visiting us yesterday with his family :)
He brought back the fully repaired Meteor PCB set, so I'll be playing Asteroids soon anyway (even if it's a bootleg).
We also discussed this and I let him show the pics because I knew he would be interested. He hadn't seen one like that before and was quite interested in it. He also mentioned Asteroids was probably one of the most bootlegged games.
Of course this cab was converted, but with a nice working Asteroids PCB at hand (which I got for a great deal) and the very cheap price of the cab, I would have taken the chance to get a B/W vector (chassis) somewhere.
In fact there is an Asteroid mentioned on Andy's list

D'oh! You're right. I remember seeing that now, but isn't the artwork different?
-
Yup and the cabinet on the flyer of that Asteroid is exactly the same as our Meteors...... :D

Ohh man... Someone has to Program a 2 player Simultaneous
Asteroids Deluxe :D
Players could crash into each other and explode if not careful.
Would also force people away from direct center... making it even more
challenging.
Might have to slow fire speed down a hair... cause destruction with 2 ships
could be very insane hehe.
Possibly make the ships a hair smaller too.
( I dont could Blasteroids. The ships are too big, and the feel just isnt the
same.)
-
Or you could play Space Duel.
-
The only things I can guess are a) it's a repro mistake for a resto project, b) it's a very very rare machine that somehow made it overseas.
-
Thanks Chad.
I must have skipped over this one somehow.
I only toyed with it for a moment... so not sure about it... but its pretty cool. Seems
a lot less frantic than Asteroids Deluxe though. :( And while trippy.. it doesn't
capture the realism that is somewhat implied by the originals. Ahh well. Maybe
someday a worthy sequal will be made.
-
Makes me weep ...

You should try Xpilot (http://www.xpilot.org/). It lost the actual asteroids flying around, but it's multiplayer (shooting each other) and the ship and controls are pretty much like Asteroids.

Andreas did some great investigation about the Marquee:

Here's Andy's comments:
Re. The AsteroiD, I have attached a picture showing the differences between Asteroids and AsteroiD (this is a picture from my 'collection' of unknown stuff:
- the Atari logo is missing on the latter
- some chnages had been made to the artwork in areas where the 'S' was missing
- the AsteroiD uses real rocks at the top half instead of dots
I've got the info that the cab originated from Spain.
So, this may have been one very interesting bootleg......I hope it will survive.....

Though loving the color vector display when it came out, I felt kinda the same as above about the game. I for sure thought the little 'ppfftt' thrust sound was weak. Still do. But I've grown to like it and don't care.

Yeah, neat.
