Title: Where to discharge? Decasing TV Tube...
Post by: Mauzy on September 02, 2008, 10:38:47 pm
I'm going to take the tube out of a dead TV (was working, then chassis started screaming, no picture or neck glow) to either swap with a 19k7201 chassis or use with an 8liner chassis. Not sure which yet. Of course before doing anything to it I want to discharge the tube, but there is no metal frame to ground to. Where should I ground to to safely discharge the tube?

BTW, the tube is an RCA A48AAB13X02 if anybody has any info on it...

There should be a metal strapping across the back of the tube that touches the aquadag.  Connect to that.

Googled aquadag, then looked. All I see around the tube is the degaussing coil.

Heres what Im working with:

It's that black stuff all over the back of the tube.  Like a coating.

Those metal straps going across it is what you want to connect to.

OH I thought those exposed bands were part of the degaussing coil (if there even is one...) This is the first time I've done anything with tubes, so I want to make sure I do it right.

The degaussing coil is a THICK bundle that goes around the outside face of the tube.

Oh I get it. I guess it discharged when I connected it to that bare strap-thing. I touched the anode a couple times, heard a small snap once, and didn't die taking the anode off so I guess I'm in the clear. Thanks for your help, Peale!

Yep, that's about it.

You probably would have had a problem taking it off even without discharging.  After sitting a while the charge can dissipate.  But better safe than sorry!

Do remember to discharge before putting it back on.
