Title: Pop up spinner?
Post by: CaptainRhythm on September 02, 2008, 02:28:20 pm
It's a ways off yet, but I'm doing research for my cabinet. One of the things
I'm looking into is a spinner that can pop up when needed and pop in when
not.  I wont be playing many spinner games but i'd like the ability should the
need arise.

Are there any like this in production?  I've looked around a little and haven't
come up with anything.

It might be overly complicated if i have to make one myself, but I like the idea.

If the idea needs clarification, i did an awesome MS Paint mockup.  :)

Might be able to have the whole spinner on some sort of mount and have the whole thing go up and down.  Could get some spring lock things from a hardware type store I'd think.

I would love something like this.  I want a couple spinners, and the main thing that has held me back (aside from funding) is that I'm just not sure I want the panel they would go on to be so crowded.  If I could make them go flush when not in use I would be all over this.  They'd potentially create a second problem for me, though.  I don't have much room under my panel either, and these would need a mounting footprint that is larger than the spinner wheel.  If it was very much bigger at all they would be impossible for me to mount.

I was thinking of the kind kif latch like they have on glass doored entertainment centers where you push it in and it pops the door out.  Just have to get one that travels a good 3" or so.

3" is over-shooting it.

3" is over-shooting it.

Well whatever, just depends how high you want it when fully raised and how low you want it when fully depressed...

You might make a bracket, mount one of those entertainment center door magnets on it.
Mount the square piece of metal that usually attaches to the glass door to the bottom of the spinner.
Press spinner once it retracts, press again and it pops up. of course you would need a spring on it too.

You could also make a slide device, but then you would have to have the handle or lever for the slide on your CP somewhere.

DaOld, the first idea likely wouldn't work if you wanted a Tron push/pull spinner. The second idea might work though.

CaptainRhythm, can you tell us the depth inside your CP? It might give us a better idea of what the space limitations are. I have several ideas, but they all have varying degrees of complexity, cost, and space requirements.

That second idea would scare me. A lot of force against and friction underneath. However, if it were spring-loaded, and the slider was pronged such that it would lock the spinner in place when pushed down, and then also sit underneath it when released, that might work. Mounting would still be an issue. I'm sure a commercial enterprise could come up with a decent aftermarket device, but not for under a hundred dollars I'd bet. And it wouldn't be universal.

it's really funny you started this topic because i would purchase this item if it were an attachment for the TT2 it seems plausible enough to do , a spring / latch I wish randy would create it because often someone playing on my cab runs into my tt2 when rolling the trackball.. maybe bad positioning on my part, but my cab is limited with room and i like it's position despite the fact that others disagree / run into it from time to time

This would be pretty freakin sweet.

Yeah . . . the spinner directly above the trackball is a very common design, and it spells broken fingers for Golden Tee fans.

Why not mount the spinner Horizontally and put it on the front of the
Control panel?
