I'm looking for a pair of computer speakers that will fit in a tight space but still sound good. The space is 2" tall by 12" wide - the speakers would likely have to lay on their sides. Any recommendations?

Not gonna happen in that space I am afraid. 50mm is about enough to put a tweeter in, maybe a small midrange.

I got a dell soundbar (http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/monitors/1901FP/en/soundbar.htm), made to fit on an LCD monitor.
They sound pretty decent for small speakers.

I have a soundbar that I might try out, but its one that has a power lead from the monitor, and I wasn't sure how to make it work without the monitor power....

I picked up a Dell soundbar (with power) for $18 so I think I'll try that out. I also have some Bose computer speakers that came with an old Gateway I bought back in 2000. I remember they sounded nice for such tiny speakers so maybe I'll try those as well (although without the subwoofer it might not sound as nice).

On my test bench, I hooked the soundbar to the PC power supply (yellow and blackwires),
outside shell of the bar power plug was negative (black) on mine.
Im worried if this will place too much strain on the PS over time though.
My bar is rated for 12 volts at 1 amp.

Not a chance...
