Last week, I finally got my first cabinet finished. I had an old 27" samsung CRT that I'd planned on using in it, and before construction started, I'd made sure everything worked as expected. Then I ended up taking a few months to finally finish everything, and when I finally put the TV in place, it fit perfectly, but had these nasty diagonal lines on the svideo input that I couldn't get rid of.
After much adjusting and cursing, I decided to try a different TV, and since I happened to have access to another 27" CRT, I gave it a try, and found that it was a MUCH better picture. The only catch is, the first TV was 26" wide, so I made the inside of the cab 27". The new TV at its widest is 27.5".
So, does anyone have any suggestions on how to make a TV slimmer? It looks like I can't cut much off the case and still keep it closed, and I don't really want to de-case a TV. At this point I'm thinking of routing a 1/4" groove into each side of the cab (3/4" MDF) where the front of the TV needs to sit. I might also take a plane to the widest part of the plastic and see if I can gain a little more space that way. The only other alternative I can think of is rebuilding all the interior panels to be an inch wider, and I really don't want to do that at this point :)
Any other suggestions from others who have tackled this problem?

souds like you know all your options and have to decide if your going to shave the cab side's or tv's side's or going to de-case the tv intirely other then that there really is nothing else you can do except build the cab bigger.

I just have to see if I can get 1/2" of flex out of the case if there's some extra space to compress.

I would just keep on looking for a TV that fits. Look on craigslist and ebay for 27" tv's in your area. You may also want to list the two tv's that you have to fund the purchase of another tv.

Anger ended up getting the better of me last night, and I ended up just chopping up the TV case. Here's the result:

Basically, I just cut the two sides off of the cabinet, and replaced them by just sticking the plastic back inside the case. It's not tightly sealed, but it's a mostly intact case. The back is solidly on, and it's just about impossible to reach in and touch something dangerous, which was one of my main concerns. Now to finish the build up (mostly just artwork and touchup left).

It's not like it's a 'sealed' enclosure, anyway. There are vents, you know. Remember, monitors are normally fully exposed in cabs, so missing the sides on the TV is no biggie. I understand the idea, though. I'm just saying it's obsessive. Or maybe you were concernced about some time in the future if you took it out to use again as a TV?

i thought u'd had it "decased" .... ok, its installed , so no matter .....
anyway, being an rca tv, i am curious as to the chassis number CTC ????
