Who are you kidding ? You're going to do them both anyway (after you beat your $$$ out of that TV guy)!

Is Paperboy not considered a "classic"?  I was just wondering if people here would be opposed to it's maming.  The reason I ask is that I have a gutted Defender cabinet that I was considering restoring but I have to buy everything new so I"m not sure how that is really a "restore".  Plus a restoration would be pretty expensive.

Anyway, to answer your question I think a driving mame would be an excellent project and would be interested to follow your progress on it as I also have an interest in doing this at some point.

Frizz, you going all out on the Pole Position if you go that way, racing stripes & sponser stickers, ect?  That to me, IMO, is just a sweet project.  Besides, they might one day get the rest of the MAME driving games emulated fully and you could always enjoy those later...

As for the Defender question, if all you have is the cabinet and nothing more, I don't see a problem making it a MAME machine. My Track and Field had none of its original parts, so I MAMEd it without much concern.

I voted Paperboy restore.  One of my all time favorite games: great soundtrack, unique controller that can't be easily replicated, good original gameplay.  Do you already have the medium resolution monitor then?  That seems to be the biggest problem with restoring those machines.

I have a non-working medium res in the cab...and the boards only click i a loop.  I have a Bob Roberts yoke repair kit for the monitors chassis already.  I even have new vinyl and side art coming in the mail next week.  I figured once I rebuild the monitor and get it running,  perhaps something on-screen will help me in determining what I should do with the PCBs.

On the other hand I have the Pole Position cab,  the Throttle/Break setup,  the 4-way stick and even all the encoders necessary to run it all... All I need is to drop the Vision Pro I have sitting here in to the cab and build a PC for it....OR buy a 21" PC monitor,  decase it,  and drop IT in.  I still haven't decided if I want to go authentic with a standard res monitor or go with the PC monitor enabling me to play some decent PC driver games too...

I chose the Paperboy restoration because I think racing games is one of the areas where MAME is weak. There is such an wide variety of steering setups that it's tough to play them all correctly with a single setup.

If it was a sit down cab with a Logitech G25 and shifter for rFactor and Need For Speed type stuff, I'd opt for that.

Don't forget that you can also run the PC racing games at 640x480 interlaced with the CGA monitor.  You may even be able to do 800x600 interlaced with some size adjustments.  Not exactly HD or anything, but it would look pretty good I think.

I voted Paperboy. Great game and a unique cabinet. Pole Position mame driver would be nice too, but I think it would be awesome to have a dedicated Paperboy in nice, working condition!

Yeah, the Paperboy is the better option considering our goal is PRESERVATION.

The mame driving cab sounds nice and all, but preservation is the number one goal.

.....why a 4-way shifter with an optical 360 wheel. Don't such shifter games use 270 wheels?

I voted for Paperboy restore too, only because if I were to walk in your basement and see both on display, I'd make the beeline towards the Paperboy first.

Thank you for your votes.  The decision has been made.  With 9 votes vs 6 votes,  the Paperboy will be restored first.  On that front,  I have a bit of good news.  The new vinyl and side art arrived today.  I also happened to just locate a working PCB set for $150.00 which I purchased.  All I need to do now is rebuild the medium res monitor (Bob Roberts kit already in hand).  Once completed and when I get the board set and the game is up and running,   it's time to strip the cabinet and get to work on restoration.

Arcade monitor. No PC games are playable with a 360deg wheel, plus Pole Pos looks shite on a PC monitor ;)
